Pilgrims Rest Cemetery, Smith Road, Southside, Etowah County, Alabama greatly appreciates your donation for mowing and upkeep of the cemetery. Our decoration day was May 2nd. Thanks to all of you who have donated this year! We received four contributions this last week (June 2026), so it's never too late to contribute to the mowing fund. We mow all the lots, not just the ones where family members have made donations. If you have loved ones buried in PRC or you have purchased lots, please consider a gift to keep all the grounds trimmed and in good shape. We are thankful for any amount you wish to contribute. Donations can be put in the lock box at the cemetery or mailed to Pilgrims Rest Cemetery c/o Nancy Lovvorn, 3171 Hawthorne Circle, Southside, Alabama 35907.

10 more days until the annual decoration day at Pilgrims Rest Cemetery in Southside. Mark your calendar: first Saturday in May which is May 2, 2026 this year. It's always a time to see families and friends and often it's the only time in the year we see one another. CEMETERY CLEAN-UP.
We've had some clean-up days at Pilgrims Rest Cemetery, Southside - getting ready for the annual decoration day on the first Saturday in May. Everyone had adequate time to remove old faded flowers, Christmas decorations, etc., so if you see your graves with no flowers they were removed for our weedeaters to do some trimming. Mowing crew is scheduled this week and again the week before May 2nd.

"A cemetery is a history of people – a perpetual record of yesterday and a sanctuary of peace and quiet today. A cemetery exists because every life is worth loving and remembering always."

I saw this quote and wanted to share with all of you who have loved ones buried in Pilgrims Rest Cemetery, Southside. I know many of you agree that this old cemetery, which dates back to 1859, is a very peaceful setting. The photo shows how beautiful it is currently maintained. Hopefully it can always be well-kept and a place that descendants will want to view their family graves.

If you have questions regarding policies of PRC, I will gladly share with you. Nancy Griffin Lovvorn - Feb. 22, 2026

Today is Feb. 19th, so spring will arrive in just over a month. "Old faded" flowers need to be picked up by mid-March if you want to dispose of them in the cemetery dumpster. If the dumpster is full, just bring a garbage bag and discard them at home. Dumpster pickup is only once a month, so we have March and April to get our old flowers taken away before Decoration Day which is the first Saturday in May - (May 2, 2026). Some graves have beautiful Christmas arrangements which could be taken home and recycled. Let's all do our part in keeping the cemetery in good shape! Nancy

Margaret Daniel was Lee's "assistant" all those many years he served on the Pilgrims Rest Cemetery Board of Directors. She helped him mark graves for burials and showed her interest in keeping the cemetery well-maintained. She had a smile for everyone, so it's a sad announcement to post an obituary for our friend. Rest in peace!
