The good news of the gospel is not that Christ simply showed us the way—He is the way. As our Prophet, Priest, and King, Jesus perfectly reveals God, intercedes for His people, and reigns with all authority. Because of Him, we can draw near to the throne of grace with confidence.

Psalm 19. A Psalm of praise.

Psalms of praise celebrate who God is and what He has done. In calling God’s covenant people to join together in worship, these songs focus on God’s character—his power, goodness, and faithfulness—and His unshakable acts in creation and redemption. Such psalms typically include both an invitation and a rationalization for worship that lead directly to expressions of joy and gratitude. Praise rehearses God’s attributes and works and subsequently cultivates a sincere adoration and awe of Him in the people of God.

Messianic psalms point beyond their immediate historical setting in anticipation of a promised Messiah and His perfect rule and reign. Although rooted in the experiences of Israel’s kings, especially David, these hymns ultimately anticipate a greater, future king who will altogether fulfill God’s purposes. In fact, interpreted in light of redemptive history as revealed in the New Testament, these psalms find their true fulfillment in the person and work of Jesus Christ.
