Gishrei Shalom Jewish Congregation is a small, but active Reform Jewish community in Southington, CT providing worship, educational programming and more since 1984. Statement of Inclusion

Gishrei Shalom Jewish Congregation (GSJC) is a warm, caring, supportive and inclusive community rooted in Reform Jewish tradition, education and celebration. We encourage you to experience and explore Judaism wi

th us and with Jews around the world through observance of Jewish life cycle events and holidays. We dedicate ourselves to acts of tikkun olam (repairing the world), to create a world in which all individuals are honored and connected. Our name, Gishrei Shalom, means “bridges of peace”, which drives our commitment to working toward social justice and peace amongst all. We stand for a Judaism that affirms the dignity and worth of every person and cherish the richness that this diversity brings to our congregation. We embrace the full range of our human tapestry, recognizing the inherent worth of each thread. Each time we gather, whether for worship, social action or community events, we build connections as a family.

A former minister in Southington and good friend to GSJC has passed away. Rev. David Strosahl worked closely with our congregation on a number of issues. His church also sponsored annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. events. May his memory be for a blessing.

Nicole Zador, archivist at the Jewish Historical Society, will present a look at New Haven’s early Jewish writers, drawing on books, newspaper clippings, and documents from the Society’s archives.

The program spans more than a century of literary life in the city, from Minna Kleeberg, a German-born poetess, to Al Capp, the New Haven-born cartoonist behind the beloved comic strip Li’l Abner, to the Abelsons, a family of journalists and poets that included Chayke Abelson, who published her first Yiddish poetry collection at the age of 16. We’ll learn not only about the writers themselves, but also the context in which they wrote: their community, and their relationships to one another.

Together, these writers, whether poets, novelists, historians, cartoonists, and journalists, helped shape Jewish cultural life in New Haven and beyond.
