We look forward to greeting Rev. John Gancarz as temporary parochial vicar at St. Luke Parish after Fr. Cronin moves. May 22nd โ€“ The Memorial of St. Rita of Cascia

Margarita was born in 1386 in the town of Roccaparena, Umbria, Italy to an older couple. She longed to join the Augustinian nuns in Cascia, but her parents betrothed her when she was 12 to Paolo Mancini. He was a violent and abusive man. While disappointed, she agreed to the wedding through obedience to her parents when she was 18. She had twin sons, and lived with her abusive husband for 18 years. Her huband was eventually ambushed and killed by peole with whom he fought. When their sons vowed vengeance, Rita begged her sons to forgive and live in peace. When her sons later died from illness, she longed to live her dream of religious life. Some women who were sisters of her husbandโ€™s killers were in the community and tried to block her entrance. Rita prayed for healing, and eventually was admitted to the community when she was 36 years old. Rita lived in the convent for 40 years, devoted to prayer and acts of charity. While in prayer before a crucifix, a thorn from Christโ€™s crown pierced her forehead and caused a wound that bled for 15 years. She died on May 22, 1457. St. Rita is the patron of abuse victims, sick people, widows, and desperate causes.

May 21st โ€“ The Memorial of St. Christopher Magallenes and Companions

Born in 1869 to a poor family from La Sementera, Totatiche, Jalisco, Mexico. As a child, he worked as a shepherd. Cristobal would go to seminary and was ordained a priest. He helped found schools, newspapers and catechism centers. He worked closely with the indigenous people and helped them form farming cooperatives. When the government closed all seminaries, Father Cristobal gathered the seminarians and taught them himself in private homes. Thought he preached against violence, he was arrested for supporting guerilla revolts. He was executed by a firing squad with no trial on May 25, 1927 in Colotlan, Jalisco, Mexico.
