Northwest Unitarian Universalist Church

Northwest Unitarian Universalist Church Sunday services are at 10:30 a.m. Religious Education for children and youth is available at the 10:30 am service.

Northwest UU Church is a growing, multigenerational congregation grounded in the history and heritage of liberal religion. We are young and old, straight and gay, able-bodied and not, diverse in color, ethnicity, and class. We walk varied spiritual paths to find meaning and purpose in our lives, but we are united in our belief in the worth and dignity of all people, and the obligation to express our faith through acts of justice and compassion.

Revs. Julie Brock, Karen Madrone, & Connie Grant
This Sunday, four congregations—First UU Church of Detroit, Northwest UU Church, UU Church of Farmington, and BUC—will join together in a joyous celebration of Motor City Pride! After the service, all are invited to march in the Motor City Pride Parade! A shuttle bus will be available to take people from First UU Detroit directly after service to the start of the parade at Fort St. and Griswold. (Fill out this form so we can get a rough headcount). The route is about a half-mile walk. Anyone who would like to watch the parade can also get on the bus and be taken to a watching point. The bus will take everyone back to First UU. You can also meet up at the parade start if you are coming from somewhere else. Click here for more details about the parade.
Parking at UU Detroit
Street parking is free on Sundays. The map below shows the church complex. “Church Parking” is labeled in white. The main entrance is off Cass, labeled with a red arrow below.

Rev. Julie Brock
Have a burning question about theology, ethics, pop culture? Ask the minister, she should be able to answer two out of the three (I'll let you guess which ones). We will have our annual question box service this day. See you in church.

"Ye That Are Spiritual"
Joint at NWUU
RJ Jones, Guest Speaker
At the heart of this Memorial Day sermon is a difficult but necessary question: How do we who are spiritual pursue truth, justice, and conviction without becoming morally distorted by the very darkness we oppose? In a culture increasingly drawn toward outrage, division and even the prospect of civil war, this homily challenges spiritual people to embody a different kind of strength, resistance, and transformation—one rooted in restoration, moral discipline, humility, and love practiced not merely as sentiment, but as a way of life.

Joint at NWUU
Rev. Julie Brock & Eva Leventer
In religious community we witness each other through various stages of life. We act as a bridge accompanying one another across life's rocky landscapes of change. When our youth graduate from high school we have a tradition of celebrating them and forming a bridge from which they can wander into their next phase of life. It is a beautiful moving service that celebrates those we have raised among us. See you in church.

Revelation is not sealed. Our faith teaches us that truth is always changing and actively uncovered by each of us. This is not a static fact; it is an invitation to practice. What would it look like to truly practice revelation in our lives? No one of us has all the answers. So let’s practice together.

This is a chilling request! Claiming to be an attempt to combat anti-semitism it could be used for any nefarious purpose. If you want to combat anti-semitism on campus you just provide people with a hotline to report abuse. You don’t request the name, phone number and home address of every Jewish employee!

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission is investigating a "pattern or practice" of antisemitic harassment of Jewish employees at the school.

"Meeting the Moment"
Joint at NWUU
Revered Dr. Matthew Johnson
How can congregations meet this moment – the national political context, the hunger for meaning, the epidemic of loneliness – with bravery, curiosity, and creativity? This moment is fraught with danger and potential. So much is at stake. Yet, our history, present, and collective covenant can guide us as we answer this summons.
The Rev. Dr. Matthew Johnson is a Congregational Life Consultant for the MidAmerica Region of the UUA, working primarily with pastoral size congregations across the Midwest, including with Northwest and First Detroit. He’s also a third-generation Unitarian Universalist, a parent of two teenagers, a big nerd, and a lover of our faith. He has served in more leadership roles in Unitarian Universalism than a person could shake a stick at if a person did shake sticks, He served for five years as the minister at High Plains UU Church, Colorado Springs, and for the last 17 years as the Senior Minister at The Unitarian Universalist Church, Rockford, IL, which he completed in August 2025.

Church doesn't look like it did a few decades ago. The cost of living, of food, of staff are rising. People have fewer resources and more distractions. So what do you we do? We do what UU's do best... adapt, change, and create a new paradigm. Come to church for reflection and stay for conversation about how we want to live into the possibilities of what beloved community holds, with the resources we currently have

What do you do when you've spent the week hiding in your basement from tornadoes brought on by climate destruction? Call together tribes of dragons to solve the problem...obviously. Join our youth as they present a service they wrote about the calamity of climate change and the power of imagination.
