Today we celebrate the Feast of the Birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary, celebrated nine months after the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. Mary’s birth is a special celebration in the Church because of her unique role in salvation history.

Although Scripture tells us very little about Mary’s childhood, the Church has long reflected on the beauty and holiness of her life. Saint Andrew of Crete beautifully describes Mary as the “temple” prepared by God, the Ark of the New Covenant and the first dwelling place of Christ. From the moment of her conception, she was preserved from original sin and grew in perfect holiness and virtue.

A birthday is a celebration of a person and the gift of their life. Today, we celebrate not only an event in Mary’s life, but Mary herself, the Mother of God and the greatest of all the saints.

As we celebrate her birthday, let us reflect on her holiness and the beautiful things God accomplished through her. Let us honor her, seek her intercession, and ask her to guide us closer to her Son, Jesus.
