OUR LADY OF CZESTOCHOWA
The Solemnity of Our Lady of
Częstochowa will be celebrated on
Wednesday, August 26th.
We will celebrate a Mass in Polish at
6PM to honor Our Lady.

The Black Madonna Icon, also known as Our Lady of
Częstochowa, is a revered icon of the Virgin Mary housed at
the Jasna Gora monastery in Częstochowa, Poland. This is
why Częstochowa, a city located 140 miles from Warsaw, is
named the spiritual capital of Poland. Częstochowa is
regarded as the most popular shrine in Poland, with many
Polish Catholics making a pilgrimage there every year - a
pilgrimage on foot.
The Black Madonna is said to have miraculously saved the
monastery of Jasna Góra from a Swedish invasion. The
Siege of Jasna Góra took place in the winter of 1655 during
the Second Northern War, as the Swedish invasion of the
Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth is known. The Swedes
were attempting to capture the Jasna Góra monastery in
Częstochowa. Seventy monks and 180 local volunteers,
mostly from the szlachta (Polish nobility), held off 4,000
Swedes for 40 days, saved their sacred icon and, according to
some accounts, turned the course of the war. This event led
King John II Casimir Vasa to "crown" Our Lady of
Częstochowa ("the Black Madonna") as Queen and Protector
of Poland in the cathedral of Lwów on April 1, 1652.
The processional portrait of Our Lady of Czestochowa,
which has been used by our parish during processions for
over 80 years. (pictured right) was donated
to Our Lady of Poland by Anna Strzelecka
Rutkowska, who acquired it during a visit to
Poland in 1938. Father Janusz commissioned
local artist, Paul Kolakowski to paint and
restore the portrait back to its original beauty.
It was blessed by Bishop Andrzej Zglejszewski on May 3,
2023.
The portrait of Our Lady of Częstochowa which is hanging
in our church (pictured above) was painted by Polish artist,
Wacław Sobieraj, donated by parishioners, Leslaw & Halina
Rokosz and framed by parishioners, Dr. Leslaw & Barbara
Gredysa. It was blessed by Bishop Brennan on May 3, 2015.
Fr. Janusz Lipski commissioned Polish artist, Kamil
Drapikowski, to make a crown for our portrait, which was
affixed to the portrait and blessed by Bishop Andrzej
Zglejszewski on May 3, 2025.

ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
Saturday, August 15th is the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven. It is not a Holy Day of Obligation this year since it falls on a Saturday, but we will have Masses to honor our Blessed Mother at 7:30AM and 12Noon on Saturday, August 15th. Please join us.
