Universalist Society of Strafford

Universalist Society of Strafford Our church celebrates freedom of belief and welcomes individuals and families of all backgounds and faiths. Active in social and enviromental justice.

Unitarian Universalism does not advocate a particular creed. We come together because of our shared commitment to values and to ways of living, not to religious dogma. See “What Is UU?” for more about the long history and tradition of Unitarian Universalism. The Strafford Universalist Society is the second oldest in Vermont and fourth oldest in the nation. Though the society was dormant for severa

l years in the 1980s and 1990s, we are now growing again, meeting in the “new” church built in 1833 in South Strafford. We hope you will join us every 1st and 3rd Sundays 10am.

Unitarian Universalists have long opposed any intervention into Iran by the U.S. military.

Our faith tradition upholds humanitarian goals of protecting innocent life and global human rights, and has done so again in response to this action and the renewed conflict.

Urge your Senators and Representatives in the House to stop the war.

A Community Read of the Book "The Serviceberry: Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World "by Robin Wall Kimmerer will be taking place in January with a discussion of the book on February 4 at 6:30pm at Barrett Hall in South Strafford.

In “The Serviceberry” (only 112 pages), indigenous scientist and author of the book Braiding Sweetgrass Robin Wall Kimmerer shows another way of living based on gratitude and generosity, a way that recognizes our dependence and relationship to the natural world. In contrast, our current economy is rooted in scarcity, competition and hoarding of resources, and our national policies are based on transactional relationships, quid pro quo dealmaking and payback, and these threaten our future.

Copies of the book to take out will be at the Morrill Memorial and Harris Library. It can also be purchased at local bookstores or online, as well as a lovely audio version read by Kimmerer herself. (ONLY 2 HOURS) Please consider reading The Serviceberry and sharing your thoughts about it with others on February 4th.

The Community Read of the Serviceberry is sponsored by the Universalist Society of Strafford and Strafford Climate Action.

Statement on the killing of Renee Nicole Good by ICE:

We grieve the killing of Renee Nicole Good, a 37 year-old mother and legal observer, by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Minneapolis yesterday—an act of state violence that has stolen a life and reverberates through an already-wounded community. This is not an isolated incident, but the result of policies that criminalize immigration and enforce borders through fear, surveillance, and force rather than care.

Side With Love is in solidarity with immigrant communities in Minneapolis and across the country who live under constant threat of detention, separation, and death at the hands of the state. We are in solidarity with the faithful masses of people showing up to build a world where the worth and dignity of all are held as sacred and unshakable truth. As people of faith and conscience, we are called by love to tell the truth about this violence, to accompany those most impacted, and to keep organizing toward fulfilling the promise of our communities and institutions to make safety, belonging, and freedom real for all.

We join many others in demanding accountability and an immediate end to I.C.E. operations in all our communities. We invite all people of faith and conscience to grieve together, to refuse the normalization of state violence, and to commit themselves to the long work of transforming the systems that betray our deepest moral and spiritual commitments.

✍️ We walk not to change anyone’s faith or belief—we walk only to gently raise awareness of peace, mindfulness, compassion, loving-kindness, and unity.

These qualities are already there in each human heart, in all of us, quietly waiting to be recognized and nurtured. They have always been part of who we are.

We do not need to change our faith or belief to cultivate peace in our hearts. We do not need to abandon what we hold sacred to practice compassion toward others. We do not need to let go of our traditions to embrace loving-kindness and mindfulness in our daily lives.

We simply walk to remind ourselves and each other—with deep humility—that these qualities exist within us, that they have always been there, patiently waiting for us to remember.

We hold profound respect and honor for everyone who follows their faith, whatever that faith may be. Different faiths, different beliefs, different traditions—all beautiful, all valid, all capable of nurturing the same essential qualities that help us become more compassionate, more connected, more at peace with ourselves and one another.

Our journey is simply a gentle reminder, offered with open hearts, that beneath all our differences, we share a common longing for peace, a common capacity for kindness, a common humanity that quietly binds us all together.

May you and all beings be well, happy, and at peace.
