Unity Lutheran Church ELCA

Unity Lutheran Church ELCA A church that also shares in the questions and challenges of life through God's love for all.

As a community liberated and transformed by God’s grace and love for all of creation, we focus on building relationships with the wider communities of the northern San Francisco peninsula; from its local neighborhoods of Avalon, Sierra Highlands, Sunshine Gardens, Westborough and Buri Buri, to our relationships with San Bruno and Millbrae just south, as well as connections to Pacifica, Daily City,

Colma and San Francisco towards the ocean and north. God’s work is about restoration and reconciliation, building up the message of love, respect and authenticity for one another. Join us as we do God’s work in Christ’s name for the life of the world.

You can’t have Palm Sunday without palm branches. Or can you?

The ancient story found in the Gospel of John, speaks of Jesus coming to Jerusalem. The crowds came to see the one who had raised Lazarus from the dead and presented palms and perhaps even their expectations.

We all continued that tradition at Unity and St. Andrew’s, but we presented another kind of palms in letters and allowed “the crowds” to share words “from the p-a-l-m-s” even turning some letters sideways and upside down like the reality of our lives.

Time was spent contemplating and sharing the meaning for us of the new words, and maybe even more importantly, meanings for others.

We hope a meaningful moment for everyone as we work through this Holy Week.

Both St. Andrew’s San Mateo and Unity SSF began our Holy Week with a parade of colorful cloaks rather than the traditional palms.

Why?

To discover the beauty in ordinary construction paper accumulated over many years among peninsula churches.

To see sacred moments in the unassuming and old things made new.

To explore what might be at the heart our Lenten journeys as we move from Palm Sunday to Easter Morn.

May your journeys be holy this week.
