What does it really mean to surrender our lives to God?

Mary's response is worth learning from - you know, that time when God suddenly interrupted the future she expected. She was preparing for marriage and an ordinary life when Gabriel announced she would give birth to Jesus, the promised King.

Though she could not yet see everything her yes would cost, including the sorrow that eventually led her to the foot of the cross, she trusted her plans, reputation, relationships, and future were ultimately in God's hands.

Let's learn from Mary today...

What if the call to obedience carries risk?

This week we learn from Esther, a Jewish woman who found herself in a moment she didn't choose facing an outcome she couldn't control. To stay silent was the safe bet, but Mordecai helped her see that wasn't the way to go.

Her courage didn't come from knowing everything would work out. It came from surrender. After fasting and seeking God, she chose to act faithfully and trust the outcome to him.

To follow Jesus means being willing to step forward in obedience when silence would be easier. Our responsibility is to be faithful, trusting the outcome to God.

Not every adventure with God is drama-filled.

This week we look at Ruth, a journey of faith that was built largely out of ordinary decisions. She stayed with Naomi when leaving would have been easier. She entered an uncertain future. She worked faithfully in the fields. She trusted the God of Israel without knowing where any of it would lead.

Ruth had no way of seeing that her ordinary faithfulness would place her in the family line of King David - and ultimately Jesus Christ.

Her story reminds us that some of God's greatest work happens through choices that seem small at the time. We don't have to live dramatic lives to follow Jesus faithfully. More often than not, following him means doing the next right thing, serving the person in front of us, and trusting God with the larger story.

What happens when you follow God and the road takes you somewhere you never expected?

In Week 3 of Follow Me, we look at Joseph (with David as a supporting witness) and discover that the journey between promise and fulfillment is often much longer and harder than we could ever imagine.

Their stories remind us that a difficult road doesn't mean God has abandoned us.

Ultimately, their stories point us to Jesus, whose suffering and apparent defeat became the means of our salvation.

The road may be long, but the One leading us is faithful.

In week 2 of Follow Me we look at Abraham and Sarah - a couple called to leave what was familiar and trust God with an unknown future. God gave them a promise, but no map.

Their story reminds us that faith isn't about certainty of what comes next. Faith is trusting the character of the God who calls, and the God who leads.

Abraham and Sarah weren't perfect in their following, but God remained faithful to the end. His promise ultimately reached far beyond their own family and found its fulfillment in Jesus Christ.

We may not know where every turn in the road is going to lead, but we know the One who does. Faith is all about taking the next faithful step when Jesus says, “Follow me.”
