As a disciple of Jesus committed to the health, dignity, and flourishing of every person, I encourage our communities to follow trusted public health recommendations, including childhood vaccinations, and to speak clearly against the inappropriate discrediting of science that harms families and endangers the vulnerable.
Scripture calls us to protect those most at risk: “Speak out for those who cannot speak… defend the rights of the poor and needy” (Proverbs 31:8–9). When misinformation places children in danger, our witness must be rooted in truth, compassion, and courage.
John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist movement, taught that holiness is practical love. He embraced the medical learnings of his day, publishing Primitive Physick so families could access reliable care. Wesley understood that God also works through human wisdom, scientific discovery, and communal responsibility to promote healing. Rejecting trustworthy science, especially when it protects children, is to turn away from one of God’s instruments of healing grace.
Vaccinations, in the aggregate, safeguard infants, elders, and those whose health is fragile. Choosing vaccination is an act of neighbor‑love, a commitment to the wellbeing of the whole community. Discrediting science without evidence undermines this shared responsibility and contradicts our call to do no harm, a core Wesleyan principle.
I urge us all to consult medical professionals, follow public health guidance, and speak graciously but firmly against false claims that endanger children. May we model a faith that honors both God’s healing power and the wisdom God offers through scientific discovery.
