The Oquirrh Mountain Utah Temple, situated at 11022 S 4000 W in South Jordan, Utah 84009, stands as a remarkable testament to architectural elegance and spiritual significance. This Temple was announced on October 1, 2005, with its groundbreaking and site dedication taking place on December 16, 2006, led by Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley.

During the groundbreaking ceremony, attended by hundreds, President Hinckley was accompanied by his counselors in the First Presidency: President Thomas S. Monson and President James E. Faust. The event also featured several other notable Apostles such as President Boyd K. Packer, acting president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. The name Oquirrh Mountain was officially adopted to distinguish it from the Jordan River Utah Temple, as it reflects the nearby Oquirrh Mountain range.

The first public open house took place from June 1st to August 1st, 2009. This was a significant milestone ahead of the Temple dedication, which occurred from August 21st to 23rd, 2009, by President Thomas S. Monson. In his dedicatory prayer, he expressed the desire that this holy edifice would serve its purpose and bring blessings to all who enter.

Covering 60,000 square feet and built on 11 acres, the Oquirrh Mountain Utah Temple reaches a height of 183 feet, sitting at an elevation of 4,783 feet. The exterior is adorned with Uinta Gold Granite sourced from China, while the pavers are made from Wyndam Grey Granite. Notable architectural features include a single attached end spire placed with a gold leafed angel Moroni statue.

Inside, the Temple showcases light and dark limestone sourced from Morocco and Egypt, complemented by Rift-cut White Oak solids from Indiana and Kentucky. The doors are made from White Oak and veneers from the Sycamore tree found in the German Alps.

The chandeliers, including a stunning 15-foot Celestial Room chandelier with 19,447 individual Swarovski crystals, add to the visual splendor of this location. Each bronze door handrail has been crafted in the USA, and beautiful murals painted by church service missionaries further enrich the interior.

With four instruction rooms, seven sealing rooms, and a baptistry, the Oquirrh Mountain Utah Temple offers various spaces designed for sacred ordinances. This Oquirrh Temple is a noteworthy 130th dedicated establishment in operation and exhibits the majestic spirit and meaning of its name—Oquirrh, a Goshute Indian word meaning “shining mountains,” echoing the notion of a mountainous divine presence. ~Chad James
