Dear Church Family,
I gathered with a room full of clergy this morning for a conversation with Andy Root, Bonhoeffer scholar and professor at Luther Seminary in Minneapolis. Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a German pastor and theologian whose most famous book is titled The Cost of Discipleship. I learned from Andy that the original title in German is Nachfolge, which translates simply as "follow." This became a launching point to talk about what it means to different Christians to follow Jesus. Interestingly -- our scripture Sunday will take us into the story of Jesus calling Matthew the tax collector to "follow me." This felt like a Holy Spirit moment to me, as we look towards Candidating Sunday, and meet someone whose call to 'follow' has now led her to our congregation.
We are blessed to welcome Emma Thomas Mitchell to South Freeport Church this Sunday. After many months of forming a job description, spreading the word, interviewing candidates, and prayerfully discerning together, our Associate Pastor Search Committee has selected Emma as their candidate.
I am grateful to Judy Brown (Chair), Meg Broderick, Ollie Brown, Lizzie McIntire, Keith Monk, and Kathy Morrison for their dedication to the search process, guided by the Holy Spirit. Emma will preach and lead us in worship this Sunday. Afterwards, we will have the opportunity to vote to confirm her as our Associate Pastor, and gather together in the Community Hall for continued celebration and fellowship. Spirit, lead us!

Yours in Christ,

Dear Church Family,
In our church basement stands a shelf with a stockpile of banners. A couple of weeks ago, I went down there in search of one in particular. It reads "We welcome YOU!" and depicts a diverse group of people (drawn by Bethany Dunfee!), including someone using a wheelchair. It has been collecting dust, skipped over every time I chose a banner over the past four years, because I don't think we should proclaim anything on our church lawn unless it is authentic and true. Thanks to the voices of our congregation who raised concerns about accessibility, thanks to the work of our Capital Campaign Committee and the generosity of so many without our community, and thanks to our Head Trustee Jim Cram and a team of helpers, we now have a new ramp leading to the back of our church. The ramp is ultimately about safety and accessibility - but, like the banner I dusted off from the basement shelf, it is also a proclamation. It says, "No matter who you are or where you are on life's journey, we welcome YOU!"

It is a joy to grow deeper into our calling to be a church for every age and ability and every stage of life's journey. And this Sunday, we will witness that in action during one of my favorite services of the year. It's Children and Youth Sunday! The youngest among us will lead us in praising our God, from the words of welcome, all the way to the benediction. So come, one and all: as the banner says, "join us for community and worship."

Yours in Christ,

We would like to thank the Deacons, Genie F, Lizze M. , Larry W. for decorating our altar for Pentecost Sunday

Notice the beautiful red draping on our altar today. It represents the burning fire of the Holy Spirit and reminds us of God's powerful love among us.

Earth Sunday and Winslow Park Clean Up
Sunday, May 17

To help celebrate Earth Day and putting our faith into action, our Christian Education Committee is organizing a fun service opportunity for all ages. After Earth Sunday Worship, planned by our Green Team, we will head over to Winslow Park to do some shoreline clean up on Sunday, May 17. All are invited to meet at 11:30 under the large group picnic shelter (on the left as you drive in). Bring a bag lunch (and some work gloves) to picnic together, followed by park clean up. Come one and all, as stewards and caregivers of our planet, to celebrate Earth Day in action! The Town of Freeport and the Park Rangers have told us that they really appreciate our help in this
effort!

Dear Church Family,
Confirmation Weekend was one for the books! On Friday evening, all six Confirmands and three adults from our church journeyed up to Pilgrim Lodge in West Gardiner, where we joined with a slew of folks from a variety of UCC churches across Maine for a Confirmation Retreat. We sang songs, learned about UCC history and values, asked big questions, prayed with our words and our bodies, shared meals, and slept in cabins that were chilly even with the crackling woodstoves (and I was pretty proud of myself for lighting one for the first time!)
It makes me wonder, what words would you have written down? I am proud that the word 'community' appears so often, alongside 'diversity,' 'kind,' 'fun,' and 'welcoming.' It's a testament to the power and purpose of church, not as a place, but as a body of people learning and growing alongside each other in faith. Oh -- and don't underestimate the importance of cookies!
Sunday was a truly joyful day in the life of our church. We celebrated good news from our Associate Pastor Search Committee and Capital Campaign Team ; we basked in beautiful music offered by Abby, Denis, and the Choir; and we joyfully lifted up our six Confirmands, surrounded them in love, and welcomed them as full members of our congregation.
There was one other phrase that made it up on the list of things we like about South Freeport Church: 'earth lovers.' How fitting, as this Sunday we are celebrating Earth Day at South Freeport Church. Actually, it is more like 'Earth Weekend' as we have opportunities to gather on Friday and Saturday to help plant a pollinator garden on our church grounds. So come, earth lovers, let's gather for another wonderful weekend of worship and fellowship!
