Sermon for 5/31/26 Pastor Randy Landman. "What does the Holy Spirit do in my life?" John 14: 15-21 and Acts 1:4-11

05/30/2026

Tomorrow is Trinity Sunday when we focus on the fact there is one God, however God has revealed Himself to us as three distinct persons, Father, Son (Jesus), and the Holy Spirit. Don't worry if you don't understand that, nobody does. How can there be one God and at the same time be three distinct persons? God is not a committee of three. Jesus (God the Son) and the Father are distinct yet at the same time in Jesus we have all of God that there is. The Trinity is one of the great mysteries in all of creation. I doubt the angels fully understand God because they too, like us, are created beings. I simply accept there is one God and in God there are three distinct persons.

Tomorrow we are focusing on the Holy Spirit. He is perhaps the most mysterious of the three. After the death and resurrection of Jesus, He spent forty days here on the earth with His disciples. He then ascended back to Heaven with the promise He would return again. Right now Jesus is still there awaiting the future time when the Father tells Him it is time to return. We long for that day. But for now, Jesus is not here. You probably think when you just read that I must have lost my mind. Jesus left earth in the first chapter of Acts and the disciples were told He would return again some day. According to that, Jesus is not here right now. Then who is here with us? It is the Holy Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit who is present and lives in our lives. We say it is Jesus because that is just the way we phrase it, but it is the Holy Spirit who lives in us. It is the Holy Spirit who is active in our world. Naturally it is ok to say Jesus because in a real sense, the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Jesus. One God, three persons, remember.

Last Sunday was Pentecost Sunday when we focused on the coming of the Holy Spirit into our world and into our lives, but though that was the first day, the Holy Spirit lives in each of us who have faith in Christ. Because of that you are never alone for the Holy Spirit lives in you. No problem or issue of life is too big because the Holy Spirit will enable you to deal with it in victory. No temptation is too strong. Through the Holy Spirit living in us, as Christians we have all we need to live a life that brings honor to God. The title of the sermon tomorrow is, "What does the Holy Spirit do in my life?" I hope to see you tomorrow at 9:30am for worship and stay for Sunday School at 10:45am.

Also, tomorrow we have a special concert at 5pm. The Forest Hills Community Band is giving a concert at our church which will be great. Today is a very special day in the Church. First, it is Pentecost Sunday. This is when the Holy Spirit came down and dwelt in the life of every believer. In the Old Testament and even in the ministry of Jesus when He was here on the earth, the Holy Spirit would dwell in a person for a specific purpose (ie. a prophet or a stone-cutter for the Temple) and for a specific period of time. John the Baptist had the indwelling of the Holy Spirit for all his life but everyone else received the Holy Spirit for a specific time. On Pentecost, everything changed. The Holy Spirit lives in every believer and this started at Pentecost. We often say that Jesus lives in our hearts but it is actually the Holy Spirit who does. Second, it is Memorial Day Sunday. Memorial Day is tomorrow of course, but this entire weekend is about those brave soldiers who gave their lives for the United States. One of my pet peeves is when people say "Happy Memorial Day". This weekend is not about being happy. This weekend is about remembering and honoring those who gave as President Lincoln said, their last full measure of devotion. It is not even about our veterans. My dad was a veteran. He served on an aircraft carrier in the Pacific during WWII. He fired an anti-aircraft gun at Japanese planes, and especially at kamikaze planes. I honor my dad's service but my father would never want to be honored on Memorial Day. My dad died in 2010 but this weekend is not about my dad, it is about those who died while on active duty or as a result of an injury received while on active duty. Third, for Methodists who had their founding because of John Wesley (which is about 80 denominations including mine, the Global Methodist Church), this is a special day because it is the date of John Wesley's conversion on May 24, 1738. John Wesley is a perfect example of what God can do through one person. Wesley was looking at how to have his sins forgiven, but after his conversion, God used him to change the world...as he can through each of us if we fully surrender our lives to Him. So no matter how you slice it, today is a special day. Do your best to use this day to be in church and worship God and also, as an American, honor those who died to give you and I the freedom we have. May God bless you and may God bless the United States of America.
