The first Reform Jewish service in history – Seesen, Germany, 1810 – looked almost exactly like a Lutheran church service.

Organ.
German hymns.
Clerical robes.

That was not an accident.

Reform Judaism began in a crisis: Jews across Western Europe were converting to Christianity in large numbers, and reformers believed the synagogue had to feel modern, dignified, vernacular, and familiar enough to keep educated Jews inside Jewish life.

Two centuries later, the same movement looked very different.

Kippot returned.
Hebrew returned.
Zionism was endorsed.
Shabbat and ritual were reconsidered.

A history of a movement that tried to survive modernity by borrowing the forms of the church – and then spent two centuries finding its way back toward tradition.

Temple Sinai was honored to welcome middle grade and YA author for a warm, engaging author talk this past Thursday evening, featuring her PJ Our Way selection Wayward Creatures and other beloved titles.

Families with older elementary and middle school readers packed the sanctuary as Dayna shared stories about her writing process, the real-life inspiration behind her animal characters, and the Jewish themes woven throughout her books. Attendees heard how those themes were thoughtfully strengthened for the PJ Library Our Way edition, and kids had a chance to ask smart, funny questions about what it’s really like to be an author.

The evening was co-hosted with PJ Our Way, which helps kids ages 9–12 choose their own Jewish-themed books each month and discover new stories that speak to their identities and imaginations. After the talk, families stayed to chat, snap photos, and get books signed, creating a cozy community moment to close out the night.

Thank you to Dayna Lorentz, PJ Our Way, and all the families who joined us for this special event at Temple Sinai in South Burlington—stay tuned for more learning and literacy programs coming soon.
