On Sunday we explored the passage in John 6:56-69 where Jesus challenges the reasons why people follow him. While the crowds see Jesus as the new Moses who will lead and provide for them, Jesus confronts their expectations and desires. What Jesus asks of those who follow him is to trust in him rather than follow after their own expectations or pursue that which will satisfy their desires. Do we continue to trust Jesus even when our own expectations and desires are not met?

This week our guest speaker, Dr. Malcolm Foley, exhorted us to consider how badly we want the kingdom of God or are we content with our own kingdoms. Jesus’s encounter with the rich young ruler (Luke 18:18-30) challenges us with what it means to deny ourselves and take up our crosses daily to follow after Jesus. Jesus’s call to the rich young ruler and to his followers today is a call to act differently not only to think differently.

Dr. Dennis Edwards challenged us to consider, where is our faith? The story of Jesus calming the storm in Mark 4 is the first story in a narrative section that addresses fear, faith, and amazement. We may believe God is powerful and able, but when storms and difficulties overwhelm us, we find ourselves questioning whether God cares. Faith is the antidote to fear. Faith rises when we are afraid. Dr. Edwards reminds us that it is never a question of how much faith, but of where we place our faith.

Kirsten Hitchcock invited us to notice God’s provision in the feeding of the 5,000 found in Luke 9, as well as in our own lives. When Jesus fed the people, after teaching and healing them, his action linked back to past provision of God (Exodus 16 and 2 Kings 4). Like their ancestors, the disciples experienced how God was in control and how he continues to provide. We are invited to consider how God’s provision fosters trust in him and provides opportunities to extend his blessings to others.

On Sunday, Nicole Howe began our journey of looking at some well known Gospel stories through the eyes of the disciples. We explored the calling of the disciples found in Mark 1 and Luke 5. What was it like for the first disciples to wrestle with what they had to let go of in order to make the choice to follow Jesus? Have you ever considered how fascinating the disciples are as characters in the Gospels? We often read these stories with our focus on Jesus, but how often do we pay attention to the disciples’ perspective? Throughout the Gospel narratives, the people who followed Jesus are ‘representative characters.’ In so many ways, they stand in for us as we try to understand and be formed by the ministry and presence of Jesus. Join us this fall, as we explore the gospel stories Through the Disciples' Eyes.

On Sunday, our guests Julian Davis Reid and Tramaine Parker, led us through a musical reflection and practice of lament. Guided by the words of Psalm 74, we were invited to sit with the groans and ruins of our world and our lives, as well as remember how faithful God has been to us. In turn, we rest in the truth that God will continue to be faithful.

This week we explored Psalm 46, which serves as a confession of faith and trust in God. The psalmist challenges and invites God’s people to return to their faith in God when life gets stormy and the earth feels like it is giving way. God is our refuge and strength, and His presence in our lives reminds us where our true help comes from. The question for us is, do we notice and acknowledge the presence of God in our lives? Are we willing to surrender, be still before Him, and know that He is God?

Guest teacher, Cheryl You, challenged us to lean into our discomfort when it comes to our sorrow and grief. Using Psalm 126 as a meditation on grief, Cheryl described how psalms of lament give us permission to speak truthfully and honestly to God and to one another as we process grief together as the family of God. The psalms of lament teach us to hold our sorrows and our joys together.
