“One of the most terrifying observations I’ve had is this:

It’s possible to build an entire version of Christianity around the sins we don’t struggle with.

We preach against the things that make us feel righteous.

We stay strangely quiet about the things we secretly protect. Demanding from others a standard that we refuse to demand from ourselves.

And if we’re honest, many of us are not actually following Jesus fully. Perhaps We’re following the version of Him that threatens us the least.

The charismatic can idolize experiences.
The intellectual can idolize knowledge.
The activist can idolize causes.
The traditionalist can idolize history.
The political can idolize power.
The wounded can idolize offense.
The religious can idolize appearance.

And the horrifying part is how spiritual it can all look on the surface.

I don’t say this as someone standing outside the problem.

I think we are all dangerously capable of creating a Christianity that requires everyone else to repent while quietly leaving us untouched.

Which means sometimes the greatest idol in the Church is not money, culture, or politics.

It’s the uncrucified self wearing a cross around its neck.”
