Wise Paths to the Heart
With Hans Burghardt

August 21 - 23 | In Person and Online via Zoom

Is warmheartedness a source of well-being? Are human beings kind by nature? How can we activate a sense of connection with oneself and others? How can we make it a source of true happiness? How far can our inner qualities of love, compassion, joy, and so on be developed?

This retreat focuses on cultivating warmheartedness and prosocial attitudes, which are essential for human evolution, well-being, and flourishing. It presents the four immeasurable attitudes of loving-kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity, as drawn from the Buddhist tradition, and explores the mind of awakening, which embraces all sentient beings. It is complemented by references to current scientific understanding on the nature and biological basis of altruism, empathy, compassion, and self- compassion.

Wise Paths to the Heart is the fifth module in the series, Buddhist Mind Science: Activating Your Potential, an FPMT introductory course. Read more about the retreat and register here: https://landofmedicinebuddha.org/retreat-guru/1937/wise-paths-to-the-heart/

Ancient Psychology for Modern Times
With Geshe Tenzin Legtsok and Karuna Cayton

Saturday, August 1 | 9:30 am – 3:00 pm | In Person and Online via Zoom

Regular bathing is essential to prevent various ailments from arising. Similarly, if we don’t cleanse our minds regularly, they become polluted, anxious, confused, and unhappy. Join psychotherapist Karuna Cayton and Buddhist scholar Geshe Tenzin Legtsok for this daylong retreat on how to reduce negative emotions and increase positive emotions, drawing from both modern psychology and the ancient wisdom of India.

Two initial steps to improving our mental health are 1) becoming more observant of our own thoughts and emotions, and 2) meaningfully distinguishing between patterns that serve our well-being and those that cause harm. Learn how to turn your attention skillfully inwards; deepen your discriminating wisdom; and strengthen positive emotions like love, contentment, and calm in the face of negative emotions like anger, craving, and obsession.

With the wisdom gained through observation of our inner world, we can make better choices about how to direct our attention in each situation life presents.
