Santa Rita Abbey

Santa Rita Abbey Our Lady of the Santa Rita Mountains is a Trappist Cistercian monastery. We are contemplative nuns, carrying the whole world to God in our prayer.

Santa Rita Abbey is a Cistercian monastery, a school of charity and of the Lord’s service. We follow the Rule of St. Benedict with its balance of prayer, work and sacred reading shared in a monastic community. It is a place where love of God, neighbor, and all creation come together in a life of prayer, sincere conversion, humble service, simplicity and joy. We were founded in 1972 in the high des

ert of Southern Arizona, a land of wide vistas and large sky where our monastery nestles in the foothills of the Santa Rita Mountains.

In this Lenten season, we are reminded that every vocation is rooted in love, a love that is poured out in service, sacrifice, and surrender to Christ.

Whether we are called to the priesthood, consecrated life, or holy marriage, the Lord invites each of us to become love in the heart of the Church.

May this Lent deepen our yes to God’s call and help us foster a culture of vocations.

St. Thérèse of Lisieux, pray for us.

Our beloved Sr. Clare Renquin went home to God early on the morning of January 1, 2026.
She was 98 years old and had been 73 years in monastic vows. In 1972 she was one of the six nuns sent from our motherhouse, Mt. St. Mary's Abbey in Massachusetts, to found our monastery of Santa Rita here in the high desert of Southern Arizona.
Funeral Mass will be on Thursday, January 8, at 9:00 a.m.
May our beloved Sister rest in peace!

We had a wonderful annual retreat from Aug 17 to 23. Sr. Mary-Ellen from our Motherhouse, Mount St. Mary’s Abbey, led us into the deep, tranquil spirit of Cistercian life. Here is her introduction:

Along the short journey of this retreat, we are going to encounter “seven” Treasures which all Cistercians hold dear and try to embrace in our daily life.

These “treasures” are moments of personal encounters with Jesus in one form or another, which may help refresh your energy and enthusiasm to continue on with integrity and love, along your journey to eternal life. Sometimes we limp along, sometimes we run, but the important thing to remember is that he is always with us, offering his peace, telling us of his love, and longing to be loved in return.

Let us not run during this retreat but gently, quietly walk along the pathway of these days and come to know a little better those infinite spaces of God within your own hearts. I suggest that you just “waste time” with your Beloved – this holy leisure will anchor you anew, and hence you will best serve your sisters, your families, your neighbors, your friends, and the whole world.

I suggest that you all make a very conscious gesture of handing over to Jesus all that has been and let him embrace you with his special gift of mercy during these days. What a beautiful gift to give him in gratitude for his abundant mercies during your lifetime.

During these few days, if we can remember to gaze at the horizon of love – Jesus, not ourselves, not our unknown future. He is the horizon to which we are walking; he is waiting to be discovered or re-discovered in each treasure we touch. He, he alone, is the reason for the journey. The beginning and the end of the journey of this retreat.

With wild Verbenas blooming all around Santa Rita Abbey, God provided us a lovely and meaningful Monastic Experience Weekend from April 25–28.

Three dedicated women, seriously discerning their vocation, came together, praying alongside the Sisters in the choir, sharing their vocational journeys (including Sisters’), learning about the Cistercian spirit and way of life, meeting with the Sisters one-on-one, and, of course, sharing meals together!

It was a wonderful introduction to life at Santa Rita Abbey here in Arizona. We all enjoyed one another’s company with open hearts and were deeply enriched by the experience.

Here are some words from the participants, hoping to inspire you—perhaps a future candidate!

Angela: “If you think God is calling you to something greater, do not hesitate to give this Monastic Experience Weekend a try. No matter where you are in life, you will not regret it. Nothing is impossible for God. It was an amazing experience for me that I will always cherish.”

Christie: “I am grateful for the time spent at Santa Rita Abbey during the Monastic Experience, it was a tremendous time of blessing and grace! It was also time spent in solitude with Our Lord that aided me in my continued discernment for a religious vocation. The time spent in community with the Sisters truly deepened my journey of the soul and walk with the Lord.”
