St. Matthias School, Somerset, NJ will be teaching our students how to use technology responsibly this year. We are modeling our approach from Pope Leo's new encyclical "Magnificent Humanity" where he pairs virtues with guidance.

God bless,
Fr. Tom

From Generosity to Selflessness.

There’s a difference between being generous and being truly selfless. Generosity can still leave us counting the cost by thinking about what we can spare, what we’ll have left, or how much we’re willing to give.

But Jesus invites us to something deeper: to give without counting the cost. To follow Him is to become less concerned with what we keep for ourselves and more willing to give of ourselves for others. As the Gospel reminds us, “Freely you have received; freely give.” — Matthew 10:8

May we grow not only in generosity, but in the selflessness of Christ.

Our teachers (and priests) are students too! 📚

This morning, our teachers gathered for a workshop focused on practical strategies for helping students learn and retain information. Topics ranged from understanding how long-term memory works to using the “No Opt Out” method and strategies for keeping students engaged and attentive.

Even Fr. Tom joined in to take some notes. We’ll have to see if any of these strategies make their way into his homilies this weekend… 👀

One more day until we welcome back all of our students for the first day of school! 🍎🍎🍎🍎🍎🍎🍎

"Let There Be Light!" ~ SM Staff Spirituality Day 2026!

Yesterday, our SM Parish and School staff gathered for a day of prayer, reflection, fellowship, and spiritual preparation as we get ready to welcome our students back this Thursday, September 3!

Our day began with Mass, followed by a talk from Fr. Tom on being the “light” in the classroom and to those around us, Adoration and personal prayer, another talk on Pope Leo’s Magnifica Humanitas, and time together for lunch and fellowship as a community.

As a new school year begins, we are grateful for the dedication of our teachers and staff and for all they do to form the minds of our students, their hearts, and their relationship with Christ!

Please join us in praying for our students, families, teachers, and staff as we begin another year at St. Matthias. May God bless our school community and all that lies ahead this upcoming year! 🙏

Why do we call Him Jesus Christ?

“Christ” isn’t a last name, it’s a title: the Messiah, the Anointed One. When Peter says to Jesus, “you are the Christ,” he is recognizing something essential about Jesus’ identity and mission.

The real question is: Do we recognize Him the same way?

A short reflection on Peter’s confession and what it means to proclaim Jesus as the Christ.
