Saint Joseph's Church - Somers, NY

Saint Joseph's Church - Somers, NY Roman Catholic Parish in the Archdiocese of New York The mission of St. Joseph's Church is to be a welcoming, caring, Christ-Centered Catholic community.

We desire to experience and share God's unconditional love. Inspired by the example of Jesus, we strive to lead all people to wholeness and fullness of life. Saint Joseph's Church was founded in Croton Falls in 1845 to serve the influx of Irish Catholic immigrants working on the neighboring farms and the newly built railroad. We Celebrate:
Our Patron Saint Joseph and our faith heritage which spans

over 175 years. The diversity of people and their presence in the wide, geographic area. The opportunity to witness the Gospel. The Eucharist for it is here that we find our unity and our strength to be the Living Church who carries out the mission of Christ in the world today. We Are Challenged By:
The call to grow in faith and to more effectively live the Gospel call to be People of Justice. The need to find creative and effective ways of communicating the Word of God. The struggle to meet physical, emotional and spiritual needs within and beyond our parish community. "They devoted themselves to the teaching of the Apostles and to the communal life, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. - Acts of the Apostles 2:42

2026 ~ The Cardinal’s Annual Stewardship Appeal

~ Sharing God’s Gifts Throughout the Archdiocese of New York
The Annual Cardinal’s Appeal is a vital lifeline for the charitable, pastoral, and educational ministries of the Archdiocese of New York.

Through your generous support, the Appeal helps fund programs that strengthen parishes, support seminarians and retired priests, care for the sick and vulnerable, and bring Christ’s love to those most in need.

We invite every parish family to prayerfully consider a gift to this year’s Appeal and join us in building a stronger Church for today and for generations to come.

March 8th, 2026 will be Commitment Weekend here at Saint Joseph's.

Thank you for your prayerful consideration of support for this vital appeal.

The mysteries of the miraculous Tilma of Our Lady of Guadalupe are profoundly revealing — quite stunning, in fact — plus they stand up to scientific scrutiny. I find this explanatory description of the details to be amazing. I hope you do too.

A brief reflection by Pope Benedict XVI:

“The venerated image of the Black Madonna of Tepeyac, with her sweet and peaceful countenance, imprinted on the tilma of the indio St Juan Diego, shows her as ‘the ever Virgin Mary, Mother of the True God from whom she lives’. She reminds us of the ‘woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars; she was with child’ (Rev 12:1-2). She signals the presence of the Saviour to the indigenous and mestizo population. She always leads us to her divine Son, who is revealed as the foundation of the dignity of every human being, as a love that is stronger than the powers of evil and death, and the fountain of joy, filial trust, consolation and hope.”

Today we celebrate the great feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe (Dec 12), Empress and Patroness of the Americas. Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for us!

Background: Our Lady of Guadalupe (La Virgen de Guadalupe) is the Virgin Mary as she appeared to St. Juan Diego in Mexico in 1531, becoming a beautiful figure and powerful Catholic icon — the Patroness of Mexico and the Americas.

She appeared as a mestiza (mixed Indigenous/European) woman, requesting a shrine, and miraculously imprinted her image on Juan Diego's cloak (tilma) with symbols meaningful to the Aztecs, leading to mass conversions and making her image a national emblem. Her feast day is celebrated on December 12th, with the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City being the major pilgrimage site.

Mt first time there was on a pilgrimage ten years ago — it was truly unforgettable and deeply inspiring.

The Story of the Apparitions (1531)

The Encounter: On Tepeyac Hill (near modern Mexico City), the Virgin Mary appeared to an Indigenous Aztec convert, Juan Diego, speaking in his native Nahuatl.

The Request: She asked him to tell the local bishop to build a church on that spot for her to show love and compassion.

The Sign: The skeptical bishop asked for proof. Mary instructed Juan Diego to gather Castilian roses from the barren hilltop in December.

The Miracle: Juan Diego gathered the roses in his cloak (tilma). When he opened it before the bishop, the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe miraculously appeared, leading to immense faith and conversions.

The Image & Its Significance: A pregnant Mary, as a young mestiza woman in a blue-green, star-covered mantle over a rose-colored gown, standing on a crescent moon (a symbol of the Aztec moon god, Tlaloc).

Cultural Symbol: Her mixed features identified with both Indigenous and Spanish people, bridging cultures and becoming Mexico's national symbol.

The Tilma: The cactus-fiber cloak, which should have disintegrated, miraculously endures centuries later, with no paint strokes or sketches visible.

Devotion & Legacy: Patroness of Mexico, the Americas, immigrants, and the unborn.

Pilgrimage: The Basilica in Mexico City is one of the world's most visited Catholic shrines, attracting millions who come for blessings, especially on this her feast day, December 12.
