Today at New Salem, we sought to make sure that God received glory in the corner of the earth He has assigned to us (Isaiah 6:3). We examined how Jesus backed up his claim to be “The Resurrection and the Life.”(John 11) We challenged one another to respond in faith when God reveals His path. The stories about Jesus are amazing, but they weren't meant merely to make us marvel. They were intended to lead us to worship, by communicating something about who Jesus really was: "Immanuel", God with us. Growing up in military communities in Japan, England and the Netherlands gave Michael Childs a global perspective and a love for living overseas.

"But I really had more tourist eyes than gospel eyes," he said. "And I kept praying, 'God, can you send me back, gospel wise?'"

During college in the U.S., Michael and Jenny met and both grew in their faith through a community that took God's Word seriously.

Jenny first lived overseas as a high school exchange student in France. The culture shock drove her to cling to Scripture and deepened her faith.

"The Lord really used it to grow me toward Him and help me see more of the world—that it's a lot bigger than my little, rural Alabama," she said.

God later led the Childs to seminary, where hearing about the need for laborers reignited Michael's desire to serve overseas. Still, they waited seven years between saying yes to God's call and seeing Him open the doors to go.

That season taught them to be faithful wherever He placed them. Mission trips to Haiti, East Asia and Amsterdam reminded them that "it's the same gospel for the same heart issues."

After a decade of teaching at Rosslyn Academy in Nairobi, Kenya, Michael and Jenny are now preparing to move to Madrid, Spain. Michael will serve as spiritual life director and teach math and Bible at a Christian international school, while Jenny will serve in member care as a biblical counselor and childbirth educator.
