North Carolina Historian and author Heather Leah took this gorgeous photo of our meeting house and shared a story about the hospitality of our ancestral community during the Revolutionary war.

BLOODY BATTLE: It’s hard to believe, but not far from this idyllic Quaker meeting house, over 250 soldiers lay bleeding and dying.

After the brutal Battle of Lindley’s Mill in the Revolutionary War, the Quaker community nursed the wounded from both sides of the battle.

And helped bury the dead in a mass grave.

Perhaps this peaceful-looking Almance County landscape was the last sight these soldiers saw with their living eyes.

After John Saxon’s inspiring and relatable message on prayer at meeting last week, I went looking for this prayer he mentioned by Nadia Bolz-Weber — and couldn’t find it. Then this morning , just scrolling Substack, there it was. I was looking in all the wrong places. Well, I am glad the prayer found me so I can keep it for myself and share it with you. A prayer and a poem shared in meeting for worship today...

Prayer for a Pandemic

May we who are merely inconvenienced remember those who lives are at stake.

May we who have no risk factors remember those who are most vulnerable.

May we who have the luxury of working from home, remember those who must choose between preserving their health and paying their rent.

May we who have the flexibility to care for our children when their schools close remember those who have no options.

May we who have to cancel our trips remember those that have no safe place to go.

May we who are losing their margin money in the tumult of the economic market, remember those who have no margin at all.

May we who settled in for a quarantine at home remember those who have no home.

As fear grips our country, let us remember love. During this time when we can not physically wrap our arms around each other, let us yet find ways to be the loving embrace of God to our neighbors.

In the more than 300 years since the Religious Society of Friends brought their way of life to North Carolina, Quakers have maintained a steady presence here. Today, their belief in peace, quiet reflection, and inner light shines faithfully.

What a difference a day can make! With the help of over 20 selfless and energetic folks, a good deal of progress was made in the ongoing tornado cleanup and recovery effort at the Glover home. Over 8 tons of building debris was removed from the site, while folks navigated shin-deep mud, fire ants, poison ivy, broken glass and hundreds of nails. "Many hands make light work"! We even had a passerby make a donation after witnessing the activity. On behalf of the Glover family, we thank everyone who demonstrated their concern for their neighbor by pitching in!
