THE STORY BEHIND "TO GOD BE THE GLORY"

The hymn “To God Be the Glory” was written by English hymn writer F***y Crosby in 1875, with music composed by William Howard Doane, an American Baptist hymn composer and businessman.

Crosby wrote the hymn after reflecting on God’s goodness and the great works of salvation. Its opening declaration, “To God be the glory, great things He hath done,” captures the central message: that praise belongs to God for His mercy, redemption and blessings.

Interestingly, although the hymn was written in 1875, it did not become widely known in Britain until the famous evangelist Billy Graham used it during his 1954 evangelistic campaign in London. The hymn quickly became one of the best-known songs associated with Christian revival meetings and remains popular in churches around the world.

F***y Crosby, who was blind from infancy, wrote thousands of hymns during her lifetime. “To God Be the Glory” remains one of her most enduring works, remembered for its simple but powerful message of gratitude, faith and praise.

THE STORY BEHIND "ALL MY HOPE ON GOD IS FOUNDED"

“All My Hope on God Is Founded” began as a German hymn written by Joachim Neander (1650–1680), a German pastor and hymn writer. The original hymn, “Meine Hoffnung, mein Verlangen,” was published in the late 17th century. Neander, who wrote many hymns during his short life, became one of the most important hymn writers of early German Protestantism.

The English hymn people sing today, however, comes from a later adaptation by Robert Bridges (1844–1930), the British Poet Laureate. Bridges translated and reshaped the German hymn in the late 19th century, giving it the familiar opening: “All my hope on God is founded.” Rather than placing confidence in wealth, power, human achievement or earthly security, the hymn directs the heart to God as the one unchanging foundation.

The hymn became particularly associated with the English church through its setting to the powerful tune “Michael,” composed by Herbert Howells in 1930. Howells wrote the tune during a period of deep personal grief following the death of his nine-year-old son, Michael. The music therefore carries an unusual combination of strength, solemnity and tenderness.

At its heart, the hymn is a declaration of trust: human circumstances change, but God remains constant. Its message is beautifully summed up in the words:

“All my hope on God is founded;
He doth still my trust renew.”

The hymn continues to remind Christians that lasting hope is not built on what the world can provide, but on the faithfulness of God.
