What happened on Maundy Thursday?

The word "Maundy" comes from the Latin word, mandatum, which means "commandment". It is referring to both Jesus' command to "love one another as I have loved you" and also with regards to the communion: "This is My body, which is for you, do this in remembrance of me". Many churches observe Maundy Thursday and have special worship services that include observing the Lord's supper and washing each other's feet.

On Thursday of Passion Week, Jesus calls Peter and John to make preparations for the Passover meal. During the meal, Jesus breaks the bread and pours out the cup to represent His broken body and His shed blood. This ordinance is followed by Christians today every time we have communion.

During the meal, the disciples had arguments about who was the greatest. To resolve this argument, Jesus does something unexpected: He kneels down and takes on the role of a servant and washes the disciple's feet. This was to model for the disciples to have a heart of submission and service, rather than focus on being greater than others.

After the meal, Jesus goes to the garden to pray. The weight of the cross bears down so heavily, that Jesus' sweat turns into blood. The disciples have fallen asleep while He prays, and suddenly Judas the betrayer shows up. He betrays Jesus with a kiss, and then the soldiers and officers of the chief priests arrest Him and take Him away. The disciples all run away, in fear of their own lives. Jesus is now alone, and on the path to the cross in just a few hours.

Disclaimer: The Bible is not always written in chronological order, so it may be difficult to know exactly which specific days these events happened.

Wednesday in Holy Week feels heavy.

Because by Wednesday,
the betrayal was already in motion.

Judas had already made up his mind.
Already entertained the thought.
Already opened the door.
Already decided Jesus was worth trading.

And that is what makes this part so heartbreaking.

Jesus was not betrayed by a stranger.
Not by someone far off.
Not by someone who never walked with Him.

He was betrayed by someone close.

Someone who sat with Him.
Listened to Him.
Watched the miracles.
Heard the truth.
Still chose silver.

And before we make this only about Judas…
it should make all of us pause.

Because betrayal usually does not start in one big moment.
It starts in the heart.
In compromise.
In offense.
In small unchecked places.
In loving something else more than truth.

That is the danger of Wednesday.

Looking close to Jesus
but being far from Him in your heart.

Knowing the language.
Knowing the story.
Knowing what is right.
And still choosing what feeds your flesh.

Judas did not just betray Jesus for money.

He betrayed Him because something in him was willing to exchange the holy for the temporary.

And people still do that every day.

Still trade peace for pride.
Still trade obedience for control.
Still trade intimacy with God for things that do not last.

Wednesday reminds us that not everybody near Jesus is surrendered to Jesus.

And that is a sobering thought.

Because you can be in the room…
and still miss Him.

You can look the part…
and still have a heart that is drifting.

Holy Week is not just about remembering what happened then.

It is about letting it search us now.

What have I been entertaining in my heart?
What am I slowly exchanging for something temporary?
Where have I been close in appearance…
but compromised in private?

Because long before the kiss happened in public,
the betrayal had already started in secret.

Palm Sunday gets the attention…

but Monday says a lot too.

Because Monday was not soft.
Monday was not quiet.
Monday was not passive.

Monday was when Jesus walked into the temple
and started flipping tables.

Not because He was out of control.
Not because He “lost His temper.”
But because people had turned something holy
into something corrupt.

They made God’s house about profit.
About appearance.
About gain.
And Jesus refused to stay silent in the middle of it.

That part matters.

Because people love the version of Jesus
who rides in humble
and gentle.

But they get uncomfortable with the version of Jesus
who confronts what is fake.
Who exposes what is greedy.
Who protects what is sacred.

And honestly…
some of us need Monday Jesus right now.

The Jesus who clears out what does not belong.
The Jesus who disrupts what we got too comfortable with.
The Jesus who will not let impurity sit where prayer is supposed to live.

Then right after that…
He cursed the fig tree.

A tree full of leaves
but no fruit.

It looked alive.
It looked healthy.
It looked like something was there.

But it was all appearance.

And that will preach all by itself.

Because God is not impressed by leaves.
Not impressed by image.
Not impressed by looking the part
while producing nothing.

He wants fruit.
Real fruit.
Obedience.
Integrity.
A heart that is clean even when nobody is watching.

So yes…
Palm Sunday reminds us to praise.

But Monday reminds us to examine.

What needs to be flipped over in me?
What have I allowed in places that were supposed to stay holy?
Where am I full of leaves…
but empty of fruit?

Everybody wants resurrection Sunday.

But first comes the Monday
where Jesus starts cleaning house.
