This morning for graduate Sunday,we are studying the difference between what we desire and what we are willing to do.

So much of success is determined by not only what we are willing to do, but what we are willing to surrender.

So many churches and preachers have asked us what led the growth and turnaround at Smyrna First these past 5 years.

When we explain the importance of discipleship and surrender to living in what we need and not what we want, most have turned away and come up with excuses.

“This won’t work in a small membership church.”

“My people would never support this.”

“Church isn’t about growth. We are happy staying the same.”

Over and over we have heard, this isn’t what we are looking for, and over and over we have watched churches shrink in effectiveness and size.

What they were really saying to us is this, we desire to grow, but we are only willing to do this. What I have learned in my time at Smyrna is God takes our willingness and creates beautiful community.

Knowing that now, we have learned it is important to take the approach that we will do whatever it takes. Almost.

Y’all come on and get some Jesus.

And yes, I am preaching all three. I only have a couple more weeks with these beautiful people and I am unwilling to not take every opportunity I can get. 😃

Sunday Celebrations: This morning was a milestone day at SFUMC. During worship, 26 youth affirmed their faith through Confirmation, completing a thoughtful and intentional nine‑month season of preparation. Their commitment to understanding what it means to follow Christ and live as United Methodists was evident and inspiring. We were also blessed to celebrate several parents who joined and the baptism of 6 confirmands, marking sacred moments of renewal and belonging.

After our 11:15 worship service, our Confirmands, their families, and their prayer partners gathered for a celebratory banquet. Many others in our congregation made their way to the park down the street for a special dedication ceremony hosted by the city. The park, formerly known as Concord-Linear Park, has now been renamed Dr. David Martin Park in honor of a beloved pillar of both our community and our church. It was a meaningful moment to witness together on such a significant day in the life of SFUMC.

We’ll be sharing more about these celebrations, along with photos, in our Thursday churchwide newsletter. If you’re not currently on our email list, you can sign up by going to https://smyrnafumc.org/ and click on the red "join our mailing list" button.

Working on the Easter sermon this morning and I am thinking about all the folks who will be in worship for the first time in years.

How do we most effectively convey why today matters to anyone who has ever taken a breath? Would love to hear what y’all think.

Here is part of my first shot…..

“Sunrise is the only time of the day where the light is separated from the darkness. And you can see it..you actually see the light being pulled out. It’s almost like God is reaching down into the darkness and yanking the light out of the darkness. My dad then said, “son if you spend all your time complaining about it, you will miss the sunrise your whole life….. “

For about two weeks I have tried to come up with the words for today’s announcements. They have been slow in coming.

Hearing Tom introduce me as the next Sr Pastor of Roswell UMC really lit a fire.

I am extremely grateful at the opportunity to come be part of the great team at Roswell. Man, this is going to be fun!!!!

I am extremely sad to be leaving the good United Methodists in Smyrna Ga. Man this has been fun!!!

I believe in the itineracy. I believe in being accountable to my Bishop and to my United Methodist clergy colleagues..I have been reading these words of John Wesley’s frequently these past few weeks.
“Were I myself to preach one whole year in one place, I should preach myself and most of my congregation to sleep."

Smyrna First, I am very excited about your new clergy team of Sr Pastor Susan R. Allen Grady, Sr Associate Pastor Kathryn Davis and Pastor to Students Jono Moehlig. You are about to hit a whole new level.

Roswell, as we like to say in Braves Country, Let it Eat!!!!

The Glory of the Lord is shining!!!!
