“A Prophetic Word”
Day 7: Never tire of being ready!
“During this time, none of us—not I, nor my relatives, nor my servants, nor the guards who were with me—ever took off our clothes. We carried our weapons with us at all times, even when we went for water.”
Nehemiah 4:23 NLT
Nehemiah had received the money to return to Jerusalem to begin the arduous process of rebuilding the wall around Jerusalem. Now, not everybody was happy that Nehemiah was doing such a thing, seeing the restoring of the wall as a threatening action. But Nehemiah knew what the Lord had put on his heart to do. So, as we see in our opening scripture, the builders of the wall maintained an attitude of readiness all the time so that they could not only work on the wall, but defend themselves against those who wanted to stop their work. Indeed, at one point, the people working on the wall, worked with one hand and held a sword with the other.
“But from then on, only half my men worked while the other half stood guard with spears, shields, bows, and coats of mail. The leaders stationed themselves behind the people of Judah who were building the wall. The laborers carried on their work with one hand supporting their load and one hand holding a weapon. All the builders had a sword belted to their side. The trumpeter stayed with me to sound the alarm.”
Nehemiah 4:16-18 NLT
It was exhausting work. But— with the help of the Lord—rebuild the wall, they did!
No doubt, a constant state of readiness can be exhausting and very difficult to maintain. In fact, it seems that concerning anything for which we are trying to stay ready, it may be easy at first. Then, as time progresses, the tendency is to become lax, either from utter exhaustion, or because of beginning to believe that maybe the need for readiness was overblown.
Jesus, in the midst of his agonizing prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane, kept checking on the disciples, only to find them sleeping. Because of this, he warned them of the urgent need to be watchful, to be ready.
“Then he returned to the disciples and found them asleep. He said to Peter, “Couldn’t you watch with me even one hour? Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak!””
Matthew 26:40-41 NLT
We know that only a few minutes after this, the disciples would run in fear when the soldiers and guards came to take Jesus to trial.
Whereas, staying ready may be hard, failing to stay ready, can end tragically.
An interesting fact: Those who are trained for special forces operations, learn to use the adrenaline of the mission at hand, to drive them into deep focus. And, the most successful operators, are NOT those who are in a state of anger or who are operating under any particular emotion. Rather, the successful operator has all of their faculties focused on the next steps ahead of them, not clouded by emotion.
Now, in the case of the special operator, losing focus can mean their lives and the lives of many others. In terms of the things that are coming upon the earth, and looking toward the coming of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, we must remember that we can never get tired of being ready: ready for the things we must face, and ready to face Him. More than our physical lives may be at stake. Indeed, we are told that Jesus is coming back for those who are watching for Him.
“The servants who are ready and waiting for his return will be rewarded. I tell you the truth, he himself will seat them, put on an apron, and serve them as they sit and eat!”
Luke 12:37 NLT
Now, of course, this watching/readiness would be impossible without the help of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit guides us in real time, no matter the challenge. As well, He alerts us of things we need to know. So, if we are listening to His Spirit, we won’t be caught off guard, caught not ready.
Please note: The readiness/watchfulness of which we speak, has no need for anxiety, fear, dread, etc. Those states of mind, only bring harm and can actually impede readiness. Rather, let us allow the power of the Holy Spirit to help us remain focused, remain watchful, remain attentive. With His help, we can, and will be, ALWAYS ready!
“Be dressed for service and keep your lamps burning, as though you were waiting for your master to return from the wedding feast. Then you will be ready to open the door and let him in the moment he arrives and knocks.”
Luke 12:35-36 NLT
“Keep alert at all times. And pray that you might be strong enough to escape these coming horrors and stand before the Son of Man.”
Luke 21:36 NLT
Peace to you.
Jesus is coming! Get ready for Him!
