Decoration Day was officially established on May 5, 1868, by General John A. Logan to honor Union soldiers who died in the Civil War by decorating their graves with flowers. First observed on May 30, 1868, at Arlington National Cemetery, it expanded after World War I to honor all American military personnel who died in war. Before the official 1868 proclamation, many local communities in both the North and South held their own tributes to the war dead, often in early springtime. Originally focused on Civil War casualties, the focus shifted to include American service members who died in all wars. Many Southern states continue to hold separate Decoration Days for honoring their dead.

The oldest confirmed grave in the Old Smithville Cemetery is Lack Ale Halstead, born March 6, 1906 and died October 1, 1907. There are unmarked graves in the Old Cemetery and early cemetery records do not exist. Thus, the belief that this is the oldest grave is based upon cemetery indexes compiled in modern times, family records, and online geneology records. It is possible that there are older graves.
