“But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8

Today, we pause, reflect, and remember:
Love was poured out… so we could be made whole.

I believe that public news sources are seldom, if ever, unbiased. Please don’t fall into the trap of rhetoric, whatever side it takes. One of our human challenges is that we see and hear through the lens of bias of our personal beliefs. I am as guilty as anyone. I have searched my fallible heart and come away wanting. I’m trying to see all sides, which is impossible. So I’m reminded to give everything to God. I will trust in His will and move forward in my life one step at a time. I invite you to join me in praying.

A Prayer for Courage and Compassion

Gracious God,
Creator of every person and Giver of all life,
we come before you with a deep need for your wisdom.

You see families living in fear,
children at risk of being separated from those who love them,
and communities burdened by uncertainty.
You remind us through your Word that every person is created in your image
and worthy of dignity, justice, and compassion.

We lift before you immigrants, refugees, and all who seek safety and due process.
Surround them with your protection,
and place around them people who will walk with them in mercy and hope.

We pray also for law enforcement officers, first responders,
and all entrusted with public safety.
Grant them wisdom, restraint, and courage,
that they may serve with integrity and respect for every human life.
Watch over their families,
and give them peace, strength, and support in the sacrifices they carry.

We ask for your guidance for our local and national leaders.
Give them humility, clarity, and moral courage.
May they seek the common good, protect the vulnerable,
and pursue policies shaped by justice, mercy, and truth.

Holy Spirit, where fear threatens to silence your Church,
breathe courage.
Where comfort tempts us to look away,
turn our hearts toward faithful witness and costly love.

Forgive us when we have chosen silence over faithfulness.
Renew us to be the Church in this hour
bold in prayer,
clear in conviction,
and generous in compassion.

We trust not in our own strength, but in your abiding presence.
Lead us to love our neighbors as ourselves
and to follow Jesus wherever he leads.

We pray all this in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Amen

As Advent begins, many United Methodist congregations sing one of Charles Wesley’s most beloved hymns:

🎶 “Come, Thou long-expected Jesus,
born to set Thy people free…”
(United Methodist Hymnal, 196)

This hymn gives voice to the longing at the heart of Advent: our hope for Christ’s coming and the hope, peace, love and joy that comes with it.

The words remind us that the birth we await is not just a memory—it is a promise of renewal and joy for all people.

💭 What longing are you bringing to God as this Advent season begins?

As we celebrate Thanksgiving in select parts of the world, let's take a moment to reflect on this quote from John Wesley, Methodism's founder:
"Thanksgiving is inseparable from true prayer; it is almost essentially connected with it."
May we maintain a heart of gratitude, acknowledge God's presence and provision in our lives and, recognize, as Wesley did, that true thanksgiving is not just a seasonal practice but a continual attitude of the heart.
