Devotional I wrote today.
"For if those who depend on the law are heirs, faith means nothing and the promise is worthless."- Romans 4:14, NIV
How many times have you heard people say they're going to heaven because they're a good person or they did good deeds? Have you ever heard people say their eternity is secure because they followed the rules? Not only do people who have no interest in religion say this, there are even Christians who say this. Some even make entire viewpoints out of it to try and justify themselves. While they may throw "God" into their messy theology, they essentially are advertising Jesus as merely an initiation into being their own savior.
Let me explain: while we should strive to do well, to strive for growth and sanctification, not only can we not do this on our own, but its what Jesus did that ultimately justifies us. So many believe that Jesus simply shows them how to live and then we are supposed to keep a checklist. That wouldn't be a savior, that would merely be an enforcer of religious law. Yet in Jesus, he is so much more than that.
He himself is the law because God Himself invented his laws/commandments. They are a reflection of who He is. It's meant to point us to our powerlessness and what God alone can do within us through His son Jesus. If we depend on our own efforts, if we depend on a checklist of dos and do nots, then our promise is worthless because the minute we screw up, we are condemned by the very law we try to follow
