Black History Month | Remembering the Smithfield Four
In 1957, four Smithfield residents took a courageous stand that helped change our community’s history.
Known as the Smithfield Four, Rev. John H. Bryant, Mrs. Florene Penny Williams, Rev. Frank J. Matthews, and Rev. Dr. Beatrice Reaves Penny challenged segregation at the Smithfield Public Library when they were denied access because of Jim Crow policies. Their peaceful action and determination led to demonstrations and ultimately to the desegregation of the library, marking one of the earliest local challenges to segregation in Johnston County.
Their story is a reminder that meaningful change often begins with local acts of courage. As we celebrate Black History Month, we honor the Smithfield Four and their lasting impact on access, equity, and opportunity in our community.
