Hurricane Creek Church of the Brethren

Hurricane Creek Church of the Brethren Sunday Services:
9:30 a.m. Sunday School
10:15 a.m. Worship I have been ask many times; just “who and what” is The Church of the Brethren. Praise His Holy Name!

Back in the 18th century, there was strong governmental control of the church, with no tolerance for diversity. Five men and three women took refuge in Schwaizenau, Germany where they gathered at the Eder River for the baptism of these adults (illegal since only baptism of infants was allowed). This group called themselves “Brethren.”

This group made their way to America in 1719 and settled in Ge

rmantown, PA. The American Industrial Revolution brought about a three way split in the group. Alexander Mack of Holland was the leader of the largest group known as German Baptist Brethren. Simon Menno also of Holland became the leader of the Mennonite, and Jacob Amman of Switzerland stayed with the old world Brethren as Amish. The Hurricane Creek German Baptist Brethren congregation was established in 1843. Out church building was built in 1874 and moved to its current location in Pleasant Mound in 1908, along with a name change to Church of the Brethren in 1908 also. Our basement fellowship hall was dug out in 1942 and 1943 to celebrate 100 years. Our foyer and restrooms were added in 1995 with the rear family room done in 1999. We are currently remodeling our sanctuary, replacing the sagging tile ceiling and dark paneling. God has blessed us richly!
