On Wednesday we have looked at prayer in the book of Job, these are some thoughts we have gleaned that may be of benefit to you, as so many of us have the opportunity of time.

Job; My Servant Job
‘… Hast thou considered my servant Job, …’
(Job 1:8a)

Job 1:4-5 / The Act of Intercession; For Family

Introduction: There are family activities that we all enjoy, are normal, and we don’t think a thing about them … except how enjoyable they are. These include:
Birthdays (especially surprise), Graduations (from grade school to higher education), Reunions (family or friends), National Holidays (Memorial Day, 4th of July), Feast Days (like Thanksgiving & Christmas or Easter)
Almost any excuse we can conjure up, and we probably feel good about these times …

Job 1:4 / Family Feasting
• ‘And his sons went and feasted in their houses, every one his day; and sent and called for their three sisters to eat and drink with them.’
• Jobs children (adults by this time) did as we do so often, enjoying a family get-together. Nothing unusual here. Nothing apparently evil either. Selah.
• What could possibly go wrong at a family meal. Indeed. What could possibly go wrong with a church family, a body of believers, when they gather to feast & remember the Lord Jesus Christ and His sacrifice for us? See I Corinthians 11:17-34 for the answer to this question.

Job 1:5 / Job’s Offerings
• ‘And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all: …’
• ‘sanctified’ … cleansed them through the sacrifices offered (intercession)
• It was a ‘first thing’ activity, similar to Abraham when he went to offer up Isaac his son, according to the command of God … it was immediate, first thing.
• This demonstrates a priority in his life.
• Not simply a concern for his children, but his concern for their relationship with their God … many are concerned for the welfare of their children and so sacrifice so that they have a comfortable, relatively care-free life-style.
• But this is a deeper concern and a more meaningful sacrifice that has eternal ramifications. This is where many parents miss the boat. In our concern for their physical well-being and happiness, we may all too often, neglect their spiritual well-being and true satisfaction in their LORD and Redeemer. Selah.

Job 1:5 / Job’s Concern
• ‘… for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts.’
• As we approach this godly man and his heart for his family, we note his concern is their relationship with their God, that it go unobstructed, even by ignorant transgression.
• We would often as we teach on sin speak of two different aspects of it. One of ‘commission’ and one of ‘omission’.
• Commission … is when we outright do what we are directed not to do, thus we commit a sin or transgression against.
• Omission … is when we fail to do, or neglect to do that which we are instructed by the Lord to do.
• Saul was guilty of both commission & omission when he failed to put to death the king (Agag) and all the livestock which remained, when Samuel said: ‘… What meaneth then this bleating of the sheep in mine ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear?’ (consider I Samuel 15:15 & 24).
• Job was concerned for the hearts of his sons … not their houses, horses, or boats.

Job 1:5 / Job’s Commitment
• ‘Thus did Job continually.’
• This was a full time all the time activity or job for him, even after they were grown
• This is how it is to be a parent. This is what it is to be a Christian.

Consider as we close: I Peter 2:9 / ‘But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should show forth the praises of Him who hath called you out of darkness into His marvelous light:’

The concern of the ‘priesthood’ is always with the spiritual condition of God’s people.
• That they might obey & honor Him.
• That they might know & walk with Him.
• That they might draw others to Him, by their life, conduct & attitude.

This is Jobs story, now tell me about you & your family.

Resurrection Sunday He Lives! April 12, 2020
John 20:1-31
‘And when she had thus said, she turned herself back,
and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus.’

Introduction: We are reading so much about the difference of this year, yet the similarity of what the disciples went through when the resurrection took place. … fear, confusion, behind closed doors …
When Paul discusses the resurrection in I Corinthians 15, the question arises “What Difference Does It Make?” and he answers it, and concludes with the thought … What a Difference It Makes! Selah!

I. Jesus Arose / John 20
• The expectation of the disciples, despite Jesus declaring otherwise, was that He would stay dead. What happened that day caught everyone off guard.

• Twice we find His disciples saw Him but didn’t at first recognize Him;
 Luke 24:16 / ‘But their eyes were holden that they should not know Him.’ … these 2 discples on the way home to Emmaus were caught off guard by this appearance of Christ, Who would guide them in a course of Messianic prophesies …
 John 20:14 / ‘‘And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus.’ … Mary, saw Jesus standing, but didn’t recognize Him, until (verse 16) He said ‘Mary’, calling her by name …
 How often has it been said; ‘if it was a snake, it would have bit you’ … Jesus was right there, Mary saw Him but didn’t see Him! (illus. trail camera misadventure)

• As seen above as well as in our text (vv8-10), the disciples not only didn’t see Jesus when He was right there with them, they didn’t hear Jesus, despite the fact that they were in earshot when He spoke to them.
 They were ignorant of what the Word of God says (see above in Luke 24:27; John 20:9)
- Genesis 3:15 / the First Gospel (protoevangelium) God promises a way for deliverance from sin … but it would come with a cost (‘bruised’)
- Genesis 22:8, 18, 26:4 / the Lamb God will provide, a sacrifice acceptable
- Numbers 21:9; John 3:14-15 / upon a cross, lifted high, look & live
- Psalm 16:9-10 / will not be left ‘in Hell’ (or dead)
- Psalm 22:1-31 / a Messianic Psalm through & through (a suffering Savior)
- Isaiah 7:14 / virgin born
- Isaiah 9:6 / Royal Deity
- Isaiah 50:6 / whipped & beard pulled out, spit upon …
- Isaiah 52:13-53:12 / clearest prophetic statement of The Lamb (John 1:29)
- Daniel 9:24 / made ‘an end of sins’ dealt with them once forever (Heb. 9-10)
- there are references through-out the New Testament (bronze serpant, sign of Jonah, etc.) referencing Old Testament prophetic statements …
- John 1:45 / ‘Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, we have found Him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.’
 They were ignorant of what Jesus had shared with them (Luke 24:6-8)
 But Jesus opened to them again the Scriptures, so that they could understand (vv45-47)

II. Jesus Lives /
• Recognized alive … I Corinthians 15:3-8, see also above, also consider John 20:29 / haven’t seen, but believe

• Still living … Hebrews 13:8 / the same forever, eternally existing, living (see I Cor. 15)

• Active; not crawled out of grave, limping along, weakened, but victorious over the grave, defeated death, now ministering to His sheep … Hebrews 7:24-25 / ever lives (eternally) and interceding for us; I Timothy 2:5 / one God & Mediator, Christ Jesus

III. Jesus Will (Soon) Return / I Thessalonians 4:13-18
• Hallelujah, what a prospect is ours!

• So our rejoicing now, is in Him who will come for us, who is alive, who ever lives, Jesus!

So, what do we take away from these things we see today concerning Jesus Resurrection?
1. The truths taught:
 The resurrection was a real life event (physically came back to life)
 It confirms that Jesus is indeed Lord (power over life & death)
 It is proof that God’s demands for justice were satisfied by His Son
 Jesus’ resurrection affirms that we are free from the power of sin
 It provides realization of our physical resurrection as well, one day
 There is reason to praise & worship Him who lives, for He has risen indeed … Hallelujah!

2. The applications relevant, two things I would choose:
 I should study the Scriptures … the disciples will always be caught off guard to the workings of the Lord, if he doesn’t know God’s Word. (II Timothy 2:15; Psalm 119:9-16; etc.)
 I should rejoice in His presence with me and for me … though oft times I fail to recognize at the time His nearness to me … He is right there, His love surrounds me & holds me (Romans 8:31-39; John 14:16b-18)
In Ephesians (1:18; 3:18) we see two majestic prayers w/ Paul asking the same thing for the Christians in Ephesus. He prays that the blindfolds be removed, so that we can see something far greater than an angelic army(II Kings 6:13-17). He prays that we will see and comprehend the blessings that are ours through the Gospel of Jesus Christ, knowing that once we do, our lives will never be the same.
O LORD, open our eyes, that we may see!

3. The anticipation in hope that is ours (John 14:2b-3 ‘… I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto Myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.’ (Heaven = Home)

4. The presence of Jesus with us … today & every day (Matthew 28:20 ‘I am with you always’; Hebrews 13:5b ‘I will never leave thee’)

We need:
• more deeply than provision (‘give us this day our daily bread’ Matthew 6:11)
• more deeply than health (‘and the prayer of faith shall save the sick’ James 5:13-15)
• more deeply than wisdom (‘if any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God’ James 1:5)
• a deeper knowledge of God, a more intimate & genuine walk w/ Him

This was the Disciples Desire & Prayer, let it be Ours.
Lord, Open Our Eyes … to You!

The Dread King Could Not Detain
This is an old hymn written somewhere in the late 1700’s early 1800’s by a man named John Fawcett. It is one that has been lost or discarded from most hymnals, I assume because of peppier tunes, simpler words or livelier lyrics of the more recent songs in our hymnals. But this hymn is filled with good teaching concerning the work of our Savior for us. So I thought I would share it on this day of celebration of the resurrection of our living Lord.

The king of dread could not detain The Savior in His pow’r;
He broke the adamantine chain at the appointed hour.

In vain the Roman bands attend, the sacred place to guard;
They see the heav’nly pow’rs descend, to hail their rising Lord.

They prostrate fall upon the ground, struck with the shining light;
They feel the earth convulsed around, and quickly take their flight.

Th’ Almighty Father would not leave His Holy One so dear,
To see corruption in the grave, or lie a pris’ner there.

He conquered with His dying breath; He vanquished all His foes;
And then He broke the bars of death, and in full triumph rose.

Now sin and hell are overcome, by your Redeemer’s love;
Ye too, at length, shall quit the tomb, and rise to dwell above.

Chorus
Saints, raise your cheerful voices high, and Hallelujahs sing;
The grave has lost his victory, and death his threat’ning sting.

This hymn can be found in Psalms and Hymns and Spiritual Songs,
printed by Melody Publications out of Knoxville Tennessee.

It was on this day that Jesus was hung on the cross and died for our sins. He endured a pain and anguish we cannot fathom. But in Him, it is finished!

RBC Study on Prayer
Exodus

Prayer has been expressed from one prostrated, on knees, standing, with hands raised, from prison, while dying, in victory, at loss, and even from the bowels of a great fish.

In this text we will find that even when a man’s heart is in confusion or at odds with God’s will, he can pray, be heard and even answered.

We will notice in our study tonight, that God hears prayer even when His people:

Groan (chps. 1-2) … ‘and looked on their burdens, …’ (2:11)
• Exodus 2:23-25 / our inarticulate anguish, prompted by His Spirit, is understood by God and responded to by Him …
• Romans 8:27 / groaning of Holy Spirit in His intercession for us …
• Sometimes prayers are too deep or painful, too intense for words to capture … or more like a sigh from the heart, a groan from w/in, rather than words spoken …

Dialogue (chps 3-4) … we’ve spoken about this prior to Exodus … see 3:11-14; 4:10-13
• Note in the text … ‘Moses said unto God’, ‘God said unto Moses’ … simple dialogue
• True prayer is 2-way …
1. We speak to God …
2. God speaks to us … or vice versa
• Such dialogue between Moses & God is like that between Jonah & God (Jonah 4:9-11) … including excuses & arguments …
• If we talk to God … then we should also listen for/to Him … a key source is His Word, the Bible (others may be godly counsel consistent w/ the Bible, or conviction of our conscience by His Spirit, consistent w/ His Word)!
• Perhaps we don’t hear Him because
1. we don’t listen
2. we argue w/ Him (don’t want to hear …)
• Exodus 3:13-15; 4:10, 13; 5:22 / notice the title of address ‘LORD’, we must recognize the Sovereign Authority of God when we approach unto Him (i.e. remember Who your talking to!)

Complaint (chps 5-7) … incredible but real …
• Moses seems, in his complaint, to border on impertinence or accusation …
• Compare this response of Moses & attitude w/ Numbers 10:11-15; Moses response to the peoples complaint …
• The LORD is gracious, slow to anger, merciful, patient & longsuffering … consider the response of God in Exodus 6:1, He just answers …
• We need to learn that:
1. Doing what God asks (obedience) is never (at least not often) easy
2. God’s timing is according to His time-table, not ours

So we see that even in our confusion, distress, utter despair, and in the midst of our inability to respond and voice our requests … our Groans, Dialogue or even Complaints … God knows, hears & answers …

Lamentations 3:21-26
‘This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope. It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed, because His compassion fail not. They are new every morning: great is Thy faithfulness. The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in Him. The LORD is good unto them that wait for Him, to the soul that seeketh Him. It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD.”

Take a walk to enjoy the seasonal blessings the Lord provides for us.

The Word God Never Says:
OOPS
‘For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace,
and not of evil, to give you an expected end.’ (Jeremiah 29:11)

Introduction:
This is not a promotion of carelessness or of recklessness, but I trust to thoughtfulness and focus as you work through confusion and fears of the day …
II Timothy 1:7 … ‘For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.’
I John 4:18 … ‘There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.’
Have you ever made a mistake? Remember it? Wish to forget it?
We all have!
But God hasn’t, never, not now, or ever!

1. When man fell from his relationship of intimacy with God due to sin …
God didn’t say ‘OOPS’; Rather He said:

• I’ll deal with it … Genesis 3:15 … ‘And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed: it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.’
• I’ve already planned for this … before it ever happened … I Peter 1:20 ‘Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world; but was manifest in these last times for you,’

2. When His Son was writhing in pain, dying on the cross, on Calvary’s brow …
God didn’t say ‘OOPS’; Rather He said:

• I’ve sent My Son … John 3:16 … ‘For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.’
• I’ve already planned for this … I John 4:14 … ‘And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Savior of the world.’
• I’ve got it all under control … I Corinthians 15:54b-57 … ‘Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.’

3. When catastrophe, chaos & disruption enters into our lives, and we are knocked off our feet … God says to us (not OOPS):
• I know all about it … Psalm 32:8 … ‘I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.’
• I’ll deal with this … Philippians 4:19 ‘But my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.’
• You can trust Me … Proverbs 3:5-6 / not just some catchy verses, but the reality of the saint … ‘Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.’

Conclusion:
There are certainly steps we ought to consider and take for our personal safety and the safety of others, but to become panicked or over-wrought with fear is not our calling.
Let us live above the circumstances, while living through them graciously.
May our calm be contagious and our peace prevail.
And may as we seek to reveal Christ in our words and deeds, cause those around us to ‘glorify our Father which is in heaven.’

‘For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD,
thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.’
(Jeremiah 29:11)

He makes no mistakes, so may we trust & honor Him!
