Bayou Baptist Church grew out of a prayer meeting for a youth revival at First Baptist Church in 1956. After starting in a home donated by Mayor Homer Fritchie, the mission was constituted into a church in February 1957. As the church grew, a building was purchased and the church relocated to the site of the present bridge over Bayou Bonfouca in 1958 and inherited the name Bayou Baptist Church. Wi
th continued growth and flooding of the building, the church voted to purchase the present site on Sullivan Road. The ground breaking service for the new building was held on Easter Sunday, 1963. The church has been blessed by pastors who have served the Lord and His Church well, starting with Gordon Monroe, to the present pastor Frank Treme. The church was devastated by hurricane Katrina in 2005. The shell of the building was all that was salvageable. Thanks to the many that donated time and money, the building was restored. Then the unthinkable happened on October 23, 2015! Arsonist(s) set the church on fire and it completely destroyed the building. As it was in the process of being rebuilt, arsonist(s) struck again on July 2, 2016 and finished burning what was left. With the Lord's grace and blessing, and donations from many individuals and groups (large and small), the reconstruction of the new building commenced. The skilled craftsmen of K.B. began nailing boards together. The new building was wonderfully completed in November 2016. And with the knowledge that the Lord's church isn't made of brick and mortar, but is made up of Believers, we dedicated the new building, on January 21, 2017, to the furtherance of the Kingdom of God and to the service of it's members and the community in which The Lord has placed us. A-men!
