✍🏻 Story Time ✍🏻

Yesterday an older guy who occasionally attends church & our CR group called & asked for a favor. He doesn’t have family, a car, or a permanent home. He needed a ride to the social security office bc he hadn’t received his check this month.

I definitely had stuff to do (mainly work on my thesis that isn’t writing itself) but I was reminded of something the Holy Spirit impressed upon me years ago: “If I don’t have time for people then I don’t have time for the ministry.” 🔥

Even though I’ve been involved w/Christian Higher Education in one way or another for roughly 12 years & value all that the research & writing process adds to my life, I have a personal conviction that people will always be more important than papers 💯

I can’t do everything to fix my homeless friends situation but I felt it was important to grab him some lunch & give him a ride.

It took way more time than I initially thought it would (3 hours), & I’d be lying if I said I didn’t get frustrated at one point (government bureaucracy sucks), but in the end he was able to get his money direct deposited 🙌🏼

I don’t remember the last time I saw a grown man so genuinely thankful. He called me again this morning just say thank you “one more time.” ❤️

What’s my point? Not to humble brag on myself but to remind you that when it comes to helping others, we can’t remove every burden in their lives…. But I’d bet we can do one thing to ease their suffering a little ✝️

It will cost us something… but investing in others is always a worthy investment ✅

Let me challenge you to find a way to serve someone in need and watch how it changes their life and yours as well 😇

Step 2— We came to believe a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

Principle 2— Earnestly believe that God exists, that I matter to Him, and that He has the power to help me recover.

So What Does DENIAL Sound Like?
It’s not that bad | I’m not as bad as I used to be | I don’t want to talk about it | If I tell my spouse, I’m afraid they’ll leave me - I only do ____ bc you make me so mad. (Blaming others) | If you didn’t nag me all the time, I wouldn’t do ______. | I work really hard. I need this to take the edge off and relax.

Lesson 1 - Step and Principle for DENIAL

Step 1
We admitted we were powerless over our addictions and compulsive behaviors, that our lives had become unmanageable.

Principle 1
Realize that I’m not God. I admit that I’m powerless to control my tendency to do the wrong thing and that my life is unmanageable.

Psalm 139:23-24
23 Search me, God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
24 See if there is any offensive way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting.
