Pentecost 2 - 2026 Year A Sermon on Matthew 9:9-13, 18-26
June 7, 2026 Greg May – final
Grace and peace to you from God our Father and our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Amen.
As I read the Gospel text for today, I asked myself what message was being communicated then and what the message is for us in today’s world. Today we hear how three (3) different people have life changing contact with Jesus. Each of these people…and likely the other people witnessing Jesus’
contact with these three (3) people…are transformed in some way. I think they are given a new life,
due to their interaction with Jesus. What healing message does this text provided readers today, that
will impact or change our lives?
In verses 9-13 we learn that Matthew was a tax collector. Tax collectors, in that period, earned their
living, by charging an amount more than required for the duty or tax on goods and food being transported from one location to another. They were typically Jews working for the occupying Romans, collecting sums from their neighbors, which were also largely Jews. And they reportedly extorted sums well above what was reasonable, just or fair as a way to enrich themselves, at the expense of their neighbors. As a result, tax collectors became among the most disrespected and hated people of that time.
Jesus meets Matthew along the road and simply says: “Follow me.” Matthew is reported to have gotten up and left his tax booth and “followed” Jesus…sort of. Actually, we are told Jesus and Matthew both went to Matthew’s house and invited other tax collectors to have dinner and listen to Jesus teach.
I feel this points to a message for us today. Jesus was dedicated to spread God’s love and to do so, he
recruited people…people that were frequently considered outcasts, needy or less desirable in the class
structure of that time. Jesus associated with and went to places that were not considered “appropriate”
by common standards of that time. Jesus asks those recruited…and I suggest us today as well…to go
forth and serve in those same locations and with those same marginalized people, just as Jesus did.
This example is a message for us to use our time and talents to do the same as we spread God’s message to the marginalized, in our world today.
The religious leaders of that time heard of this dinner party and asked why Jesus was sharing time and
a meal with these sinners…these tax collectors. It was thought that no respectable Jew would associate with a tax collector in this way. Jesus’ response was that just as people who are NOT sick, have NO need of a doctor, those that ARE sick, DO need the services of a doctor. Jesus proclaimed that he came to heal the sinners, not the “self-proclaimed righteous”, that were deeming other people not worthy. It seems to me that Jesus delivered a message to those “righteous” people, to refrain from being judgmental of others and to treat all people with dignity and respect.
In verses 18-26, we hear that Jesus had then gone from associating and breaking bread with a group
of hated tax collectors to having a respected religious leader of the local synagogue come to ask him to
“heal” his daughter, who he said was dead. Based on this request, I feel we can conclude that this synagogue leader was acknowledging that Jesus had divine powers. In essence that Jesus was sent from God. That was significant for a religious leader in that time, to concede Jesus was more than just a teacher or prophet.
As I considered this, I felt that there are some similarities to the Matthew story. Jesus responds simply by following the man to go to his daughter, just as Matthew simply followed Jesus without hesitation. It also demonstrates to us that Jesus was fully committed to do God’s work. Jesus does not just talk about doing good…he actually does good works, as he asks others to do, in God’s name).
While Jesus is following the synagogue leader to his thought to be “dead” daughter, another woman in need comes up behind him. Unlike the religious leader who has status in the community that allows him to approach Jesus, this woman is considered an outcast. She has been hemorrhaging for years and is not only physically sick, she is considered “unclean” and to be avoided.
Yet she has the same depth of faith in Jesus’ power as the synagogue leader and trusts that even the slightest touch of Jesus’ garment will be enough to heal her. Based on her faith, we learn that Jesus heals her and restores her life going forward after years of suffering.
The story continues with Jesus telling the crowd gathered outside the home where the dead girl lays that they should leave because she isn’t dead, she is just sleeping. Those that were following were skeptical. But after Jesus cleared the crowd, he took the young girl’s hand and by doing so, brought her back to life. Like the bleeding woman, the rest of this young girl’s life becomes possible again because of Jesus. The news of Jesus actions of the revival of this girl was spread quickly.
In these few verses we learn of people from different walks of life that were shown mercy and care by Jesus. One a despised sinner, another an unclean and outcast woman, the next a dead child and let’s not forget a respected religious leader, who also received mercy and care from Jesus. Each story involves someone having faith that resulted in new possibilities of life and purpose for the healed person. A message becomes clear that Jesus serves and ministers to all people who have faith and
accept Jesus as Lord, without regard to status, health, wealth or vocation.
To summarize:
1) Jesus asks us to go and serve.
2) 3) 4) There is no need to be judgmental of our brothers and sisters.
Jesus does not ask us to go or do where or what he himself has not already gone or done.
Jesus served all people of faith with equal love.
I feel God has a plan for each of us. I suggest that using our God given gifts and talents to serve the less fortunate, will have an unexpected positive impact on our own lives. May we all be open to serve and go where the Holy Spirit leads us, to serve our sisters and brothers in Christ.
Amen.

GOD GATHERS US
Though Jesus was a devout Jew who practiced his faith, he was criticized for eating with tax collectors and sinners—the religiously nonobservant. Jesus criticizes the self-righteous and reminds us that mercy is to be at the heart of our religious practices. God continues to be made known in those on the margins of society, like Matthew the tax collector and the hemorrhaging woman. As we gather each Lord’s day, we receive the healing that makes us well and sends us forth to be signs of God’s mercy for the world.
Please stand, as able.
Confession and Forgiveness
All may make the sign of the cross, the sign that is marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins.
Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God, whose compassion endures forever.
Amen.
Let us confess our sin to God.
Silence is kept for reflection.
Compassionate God, we confess to you all our sins. Our burden is heavy, and we cannot free ourselves. In your mercy, call us back to you. Your yoke is easy and your burden is light. Restore us to dwell in your peace. In Christ’s name we pray,
Amen.
Jesus says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” In the name of God, Father, ☩ Son, and Holy Spirit, your sins are forgiven. Rest in God’s love.
Amen.

GOD SPEAKS TO US
First Reading: Genesis 12:1-9
God’s call of Abram and Sarai has a clear purpose—that through them all the families of the earth would gain a blessing. As they set out on their journey they are accompanied by promises of land, nation, and a great reputation. As they journey, they inaugurate sacrificial worship at every stopping point.

1The LORD said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. 2I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. 3I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
4So Abram went, as the LORD had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. 5Abram took his wife Sarai and his brother’s son Lot, and all the possessions that they had gathered, and the persons whom they had acquired in Haran; and they set forth to go to the land of Canaan. When they had come to the land of Canaan, 6Abram passed through the land to the place at Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. At that time the Canaanites were in the land. 7Then the LORD appeared to Abram, and said, “To your offspring I will give this land.” So he built there an altar to the LORD, who had appeared to him. 8From there he moved on to the hill country on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; and there he built an altar to the LORD and invoked the name of the LORD.
9And Abram journeyed on by stages toward the Negeb.
The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God!

Second Reading: Romans 4:13-25
Paul presents Abraham as a living model of right relationships. For Abraham and for us, a right relationship with God involves trusting that God’s promises will be fulfilled because God makes the dead alive and calls into existence what otherwise does not exist.

13The promise that he would inherit the world did not come to Abraham or to his descendants through the law but through the righteousness of faith. 14If it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void. 15For the law brings wrath; but where there is no law, neither is there violation.
16For this reason it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his descendants, not only to the adherents of the law but also to those who share the faith of Abraham (for he is the father of all of us, 17as it is written, “I have made you the father of many nations”)—in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist. 18Hoping against hope, he believed that he would become “the father of many nations,” according to what was said, “So numerous shall your descendants be.” 19He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was already as good as dead (for he was about a hundred years old), or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah’s womb. 20No distrust made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, 21being fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. 22Therefore his faith “was reckoned to him as righteousness.” 23Now the words, “it was reckoned to him,” were written not for his sake alone, 24but for ours also. It will be reckoned to us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead, 25who was handed over to death for our trespasses and was raised for our justification.
The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God!
Please stand, as able, to welcome the gospel.

The Gospel: Matthew 9:9-13, 18-26
The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the 9th chapter.
Glory to you, O Lord.
Jesus demonstrates God’s mercy and power, accepting the unacceptable and curing the incurable. Even the dead
receive new life.

9As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth; and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he got up and followed him.
10And as he sat at dinner in the house, many tax collectors and sinners came and were sitting with him and his disciples. 11When the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” 12But when he heard this, he said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 13Go and learn what this means, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have come to call not the righteous but sinners.”
18While he was saying these things to them, suddenly a leader of the synagogue came in and knelt before him, saying, “My daughter has just died; but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live.” 19And Jesus got up and followed him, with his disciples. 20Then suddenly a woman who had been suffering from hemorrhages for twelve years came up behind him and touched the fringe of his cloak, 21for she said to herself, “If I only touch his cloak, I will be made well.” 22Jesus turned, and seeing her he said, “Take heart, daughter; your faith has made you well.” And instantly the woman was made well. 23When Jesus came to the leader’s house and saw the flute players and the crowd making a commotion, 24he said, “Go away; for the girl is not dead but sleeping.” And they laughed at him. 25But when the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took her by the hand, and the girl got up. 26And the report of this spread throughout that district.
This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.
Amen.

Prelude and Announcements

GOD GATHERS US
Though the word trinity is not found in the scriptures, today’s second reading includes the apostolic greeting that begins the liturgy: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. In the gospel Jesus sends his disciples forth to baptize in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. More than a doctrine, the Trinity expresses the heart of our faith: we have experienced the God of creation made known in Jesus Christ and with us always through the Holy Spirit. We celebrate the mystery of the Holy Trinity in word and sacrament, as we profess the creed, and as we are sent into the world to bear witness to our faith.
Amen
Jesus says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” In the name of God, Father, ☩ Son, and Holy Spirit, your sins are forgiven. Rest in God’s love.
Amen.

Prayer of the Day
Let us pray. Almighty Creator and ever-living God: we worship your glory, eternal Three-in-One, and we praise your power, majestic One-in-Three. Keep us steadfast in this faith, defend us in all adversity, and bring us at last into your presence, where you live in endless joy and love, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

GOD SPEAKS TO US
Psalm: Psalm 8
1O LORD our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!—
2you whose glory is chanted above the heavens out of the mouths of infants and children; you have set up a fortress against your enemies, to silence the foe and avenger.
3When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars you have set in their courses,
4what are mere mortals that you should be mindful of them, human beings that you should care for them?
5Yet you have made them little less than divine; with glory and honor you crown them.
6You have made them rule over the works of your hands; you have put all things under their feet:
7all flocks and cattle, even the wild beasts of the field,
8the birds of the air, the fish of the sea, and whatever passes along the paths of the sea.
9O LORD our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

Second Reading: 2 Corinthians 13:11-13
Paul closes a challenging letter to the Corinthians with an appeal to Christian fellowship grounded in the triune harmony of Christ’s grace, God’s love, and the Spirit’s partnership.

[Paul writes:] 11Finally, brothers and sisters, farewell. Put things in order, listen to my appeal, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you. 12Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the saints greet you. 13The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with all of you.
The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God!

Please stand, as able, to welcome the gospel.
The Gospel: Matthew 28:16-20
The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the 28th chapter.
Glory to you, O Lord.
After his resurrection, Jesus summons his remaining disciples and commissions them to baptize and teach all nations in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

16Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them.
17When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. 18And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come.
Amen.

Communion instruction may also come forward to receive a blessing. For those who have medical restrictions or
other special concerns about the elements: the bread is made from wheat flour; the wine contains alcohol. White grape juice is also available. We are assured of Christ's full presence in bread alone, as Christ forgives us and

center aisle and return to your seat using the side aisle.

Words of Institution
In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.
Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.
Amen.
Lord’s Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever.
Amen.
Please be seated.
