**** EMERGENCY NEED / UPDATE ****
Last night, a frozen pipe burst on the 3rd floor of the Main Office building (701 E. 8th Street), causing flooding in the Women's Center, Thrift Store and Distribution Center. Thankfully, no one was injured or affected by the flooding and we continue working with Case Managers and Community Health Workers to keep guests safe and cope with the situation. This crisis caused us to temporarily house all 39 women and children to other local shelters until we can get our shelter back up and running again. Due to the flooding, we also lost everything in our thrift store (clothing, shoes, household items, etc.). Therefore, both our Thrift Store and Distribution Center will be closed at least for 2 weeks. Watch for more updates to follow. Over the next few weeks and today, we will clean up the damages and work closely with the fire department, police department, insurance agents and restoration services to ensure the shelter is safe for all residents. Watch for several media stories sharing updates from the mission as we restore what was lost.
How can you help fill this need?
- DONATE: support UGM to cover the cost of damage to our facility, purchasing bedding, mattresses, computers, toys and other items desperately needed for the Women's Center. Our goal is $100,000 worth in damages. https://ugmsiouxfalls.com/support/
- VOLUNTEER: for the next couple of weeks, we are looking for volunteers to help us pick up clothing and other items in the donation and women's center that were damaged by flooding on all 3 floors. Email Elly at [email protected] for more info.
- PRAY - please keep all of our residents, staff and partners in your prayers during this difficult time.
