The plan was massive: turn a warehouse in Social Circle, Georgia - a town of about 5,000 people - into an ICE detention center capable of holding up to 10,000 detainees. That's double the entire town's population locked behind one fence. This week, it's dead.

The Department of Homeland Security has officially dropped the project. The federal government had already paid $128.5 million for the property, but a wall of opposition finally forced a reversal.

And it wasn't one person who stopped it. Senator Raphael Warnock toured the site, met with city leaders and residents, sent letters to DHS, and filed an amendment to block the funding. Senator Jon Ossoff backed the effort, and even Republican Representative Mike Collins was the one who notified the city that DHS was walking away. Residents and local officials had united against it from the start.

Warnock called the cancellation "a victory for the people of Georgia." It's a rare case of a community, across party lines, beating back a federal facility before a single detainee ever arrived.

The fight isn't fully over - DHS is still reshuffling detention plans across the country. But for now, Social Circle won.
