Simone Weil /
"Human beings are so made that the ones who do the crushing feel nothing; it is the person crushed who feels what is happening. Unless one has placed oneself on the side of the oppressed, to feel with them, one cannot understand."
"Simone Adolphine Weil was a French philosopher, mystic and political activist. Over 2,500 scholarly works have been published about her, including close analyses and readings of her work, since 1995. After her graduation from formal education, Weil became a teacher. She taught intermittently throughout the 1930s, taking several breaks due to poor health and to devote herself to political activism. Such work saw her assisting in the trade union movement, taking the side of the anarchists known as the Durruti Column in the Spanish Civil War, and spending more than a year working as a labourer, mostly in car factories, so she could better understand the working class. Weil became more religious and inclined towards mysticism as her life progressed. She wrote throughout her life, although most of her writings did not attract much attention until after her death. In the 1950s and 1960s, her work became famous in continental Europe and throughout the English-speaking world."

As we prepare for Erev Yom Kippur (Kol Nidre) & Shabbat services with Rabbi Andy. Take a moment to think where do you fit in the family of Mt. Zion. In the new year, can you lead services, host an adult Ed, volunteer for a committee, or come up with some programming that you want to lead and share with our community. All are welcome. Finding ways to make the High Holidays meaningful for your child is an important way to nurture their Jewish identity. There are many ways to celebrate at home, like reading books, making crafts, or discussing what the holiday means to you and them.

From URJ President Rabbi Rick Jacobs:
"We pray for the safety of all Israelis amidst Iran's attack. And we thank President Biden for yet again standing with Israel in the face of an onslaught from its enemies. May God protect the Israeli people and may the new year know only peace."
