On the anniversary of the signing of the "Act of Canonical Communion," a solemn service was held in Holy Trinity Cathedral of the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission in Jerusalem

On May 17, 2026, the 19th anniversary of the signing of the Act of Canonical Communion between the Moscow Patriarchate and the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, a solemn service was held in the Holy Trinity Cathedral of the RussianEcclesiastical Mission in Jerusalem. Divine Liturgy was led by His Eminence Metropolitan Mark of Berlin and Germany (ROCOR).

He was joined by: the Head of the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission in Jerusalem of the Moscow Patriarchate, Archimandrite Vassian (Zmeev), the Chief of the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission in Jerusalem (ROCOR), Archimandrite Roman (Krassovsky), as well as the clergy of the two missions.

The service was attended by guests invited for the celebration: AD Viktorov, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Israel ,with his wife, Mr M. Petrovic, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Republic of Serbia to Israel, Mr D. Kovacevic, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina with his wife, and representatives of the diplomatic corps.

At Liturgy, the abbesses of Russian monasteries in Jerusalem prayed: Abbess Ekaterina (Chernysheva) of the Gorny Monastery in Ein Karem, Abbess Iudif (Zastavskaya) of Ascension of the Lord Convent on Eleon (Mt of Olives), Abbess Elizabeth (Smelic), of the Convent of St Mary Magdalene, Equal-to-the-Apostles, in Gethsemane, along with the sisters of the convents, pilgrims from Jerusalem and surrounding towns, and pilgrims to the Holy Land, reports the REM website.

In the special litany, a prayer for Holy Rus was read; a thanksgiving prayer was also offered for the reunification of the two parts of the Russian Orthodox Church. In the memorial litany, petitions were raised for the repose of Patriarch Alexy II of blessed memory, Metropolitan Laurus of blessed memory, and all the fathers, brothers, and sisters who labored for the reunification of the Russian Orthodox Church.

During the Great Entrance and the Eucharistic Canon, the names of His Beatitude Patriarch Theophilos of the Holy City of Jerusalem and All Palestine, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, and His Eminence Metropolitan Nicholas of Eastern America and New York, Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad, were commemorated.

During the service, a combined choir of the sisters of the Gorny Monastery sang.

After the dismissal of the Liturgy, Archimandrite Vassian greeted Metropolitan Mark and all participants of the celebration. In his sermon, he said:

"The Divine Liturgy of this memorable day is a true joy and celebration for all who cherish the unity of the Russian Church. Overcoming the schism is the fulfillment of Christ's commandment to preserve the God-given unity of faith and love in the Holy Spirit."

“Many hierarchs, priests, and laypeople performed a true feat to restore the unity of the Russian Church. Among them were you as well, dear Vladyka Mark. You are both a participant and a witness of that remarkable miracle called the Church. It is able, thanks to the very fullness of the Holy Spirit, to bring together scattered children and recreate what seemed lost to people, but in God always remains unchanging and eternal. The Russian Church has revived in people's hearts faith and love for God. And this faith has united us once again.

In his response, Metropolitan Mark thanked the heads of both Missions for their work for the benefit of the unified Russian Orthodox Church and addressed the pilgrims with a pastoral word.

At the conclusion of the service in the church, Fr Vassian hosted an official reception in the refectory of the historic Mission building for the participants of this commemorative event and numerous guests of the celebration. At the reception, speeches were made by Ambassador Viktorov and Ambassador Petrovic.

At the end of the official part, the ambassadors of friendly countries and invited guests visited the churches and monasteries of the Russian Church on the Mt of Olives, Gethsemane Convent Ascension Convent and the Convent in Ein Karem.

ENG/RU

I WILL ENTER YOUR HOUSE,
or when a Christian should come to the church assembly

The Church (ecclesia — from the Greek ἐκκλησία, which means “assembly of the called,” “society of those whom the Lord Himself has called out of this world”) is the gathering of the faithful believers in the Name of the Lord, God and Savior of ours, Jesus Christ.

“The Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved” (Acts 2:47).

The Savior says that where two or three are gathered in His Name — there He Himself comes among them.

“For where two or three are gathered in My name, there am I in the midst of them” (Mt. 18:20).

From this great but quite simple logic, the tradition, or normal church practice, was born in the most natural way: to come to the church assembly in advance, a little earlier, in order to be one of those for whose faith and special movement of heart the Lord our comes down into this particular church society. To be the one upon whom the gaze of our Lord falls and whose name is remembered by Him first.

There are a great many quotes from Scripture and exhortations of the Holy Fathers of all ages affirming this simple truth: it is much better for a person to come to the church threshold quite early, and at the same time to prepare oneself in body and spirit even earlier for participation in the church assembly.

“Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching” (Heb. 10:25).

“One thing I have desired of the Lord, that will I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in His temple” (Ps. 27:4).

Venerable Abba Dorotheos (6th century):
“Go to church without fail, and always before the beginning; try to be the first to arrive.”
(Profitable Soul-Helping Teachings, teaching on attending church assemblies and preparation for them).

St. John Chrysostom (†407):
“Do not withdraw from the Church… In this assembly we are not alone, but the prophets and apostles are with us, and what is most important — the Master of all, Jesus Himself, is present among us” (Homilies on the Epistle to the Hebrews, Homily 3).

“Let us not treat ourselves so badly, but let us prefer being here in the temple to all occupations and cares.”
(Homilies on the Epistle to the Hebrews; also in words on church assemblies).

Venerable Simeon the New Theologian (†1022):
“Make it an unchanging rule for yourself — never to leave the church before the priest says the very last prayer… always to stand with patience until the end in your place.” (Words, Catechetical Word 71)

The formal time, the temporal point of the Lord’s entry into the church assembly in the Apostolic (Orthodox) Church is usually marked by a special “entry” bell ringing. An archbishop also enters the church assembly — a man, a clergyman of the highest ordination, who bears in himself the full Image of Christ.

In our very young and still small church assembly there are, of course, no bells yet. Especially while we are holding our services in an adapted, rented space. But everyone definitely has a watch on their wrist or in their smartphone…

If I’m honest, I have a very hard time imagining a situation where someone, having come to the church assembly after Christ Himself, then tries to explain something to Him like: “Lord, I was tired—I overslept…” or “Lord, well, I have my own life too…”, or “Lord, I have a lot of things to do, few days off…”

If a person has enough sense and upbringing, a dialogue of this type always takes place in his heart as he tries somehow to justify himself before himself and before God. In that very heart into which the Lord looks silently. The hour will come for each of us when these dialogues will come out, will be voiced before God the Judge and before the whole human world. And what answer will we then receive? What judgment? It is obvious…

Sacred Scripture conveys this thought to us many times: if something or someone is more important to a person than God Himself, such a person is not worthy of God.

“He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; and he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me” (Mt. 10:37).

There are people who, by a paradox, are already considered Christians, but in whose hearts there is not even such a guilty dialogue. They simply, whether from lack of understanding, ignorance, or some logic of their own, believe that this is how one should act.

Yes, the Merciful and Long-Suffering Lord waits and endures our unbelief, our ignorance, our weaknesses, and our foolishness. But, as the Fathers say, “today let us repent, for we do not know whether we will live until tomorrow” (Venerable Ambrose of Optina). When instead of learning faith every day, getting to know his faith, overcoming weakness and ceasing to do foolish things, a person remains sincerely convinced that this whole bouquet is his “personality” and his “rights,” then expect problems.

It would seem — a simple question, when a person comes to church, right? No, the question is not simple, because it is one of many markers of what exactly is in a person’s mind and heart.

Look there, into your mind and into your heart, dear brothers and sisters! Clarify for yourselves whether you want to be those who meet the entering Lord at the church threshold, whom the Lord knows by face and by name as faithful and loving Him, or whether you want all the time, until the very Last Day, to mutter your excuses in distress and try to explain that you lived worse and harder than the others?

Make the right, pious decision — to arrive for the divine service in advance, at least 20-30 minutes early, so there is time to enter the temple with prayer, unhurriedly submit memorial notes and other pressing requests for common prayer, light candles, calm your thoughts, perform the entry prayers. If you need Confession — the Sacrament of Repentance — it would be good to arrive even earlier, so as to have enough time for yourself and to leave enough for your neighbors.

Remember that entry into the temple is entry into the special presence of God, and it is better to meet the entering Christ with His angels first than to explain yourself later.

Your priest usually appears in the temple quite early; the church is open at least an hour and a half, or even two hours, before the beginning of the service. For parishioners who wish to come even earlier, there is no problem getting the keys to the temple doors.

May the Lord bless all of you with His mercy and soul-saving wisdom!

Prayer of one going to church (when leaving home):
“I rejoiced with those who said to me: Let us go into the house of the Lord. But I, by the multitude of Your mercy, O Lord, will enter Your house; I will worship toward Your holy temple in fear of You. O Lord, lead me in Your righteousness; because of my enemies make straight Your way before me; that without stumbling I may glorify the One Godhead, of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.”

On the way to the temple it is good to listen to the lives of the saints commemorated on that day prepared in advance, avoiding any secular conversations, jesting, and especially arguments or contentions.

Before entering the church or in the narthex, Psalm 5:

Give ear to my words, O Lord, consider my meditation.
Give heed to the voice of my cry, my King and my God, for to You I will pray.
In the morning, O Lord, You will hear my voice; in the morning I will present myself to You and watch.
For You are not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness, nor shall evil dwell with You.
The boastful shall not stand in Your sight; You hate all workers of iniquity.
You shall destroy those who speak falsehood; the Lord abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man.
But I, by the multitude of Your mercy, will enter Your house; I will worship toward Your holy temple in fear of You.
O Lord, lead me in Your righteousness; because of my enemies make straight Your way before me.
For there is no faithfulness in their mouth; their inward part is destruction; their throat is an open tomb; they flatter with their tongue.
Pronounce them guilty, O God! Let them fall by their own counsels; cast them out in the multitude of their transgressions, for they have rebelled against You.
But let all those rejoice who put their trust in You; let them ever shout for joy, because You defend them; let those also who love Your name be joyful in You.
For You, O Lord, will bless the righteous; with favor You will surround him as with a shield.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages.
Amen. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, glory to You, O God (3 times)

Entry prayer:
“I will enter Your house, I will worship toward Your holy temple in fear of You. O Lord, lead me in Your righteousness; because of my enemies make straight Your way before me: for there is no truth in their mouth; their heart is vain, their throat is an open tomb; they flatter with their tongues. Judge them, O God, that they may fall from their thoughts; cast them out according to the multitude of their ungodliness, for they have provoked You, O Lord. And let all who hope in You rejoice forever; they will exult, and You will dwell in them, and those who love Your Name will boast in You. For You will bless the righteous, O Lord; You have crowned us as with the weapon of good will.”

Having entered the temple (thrice, with bows appropriate to the day):
“God, be merciful to me a sinner” (bow).
“God, cleanse my sins and have mercy on me” (bow).
“I have sinned without number, O Lord, forgive me” (bow).

In the last couple of days, many publications have appeared claiming that the Bishops' Council of the ROCOR that took place this week has performed the glorification of Hieromonk Seraphim Rose as a saint. Without doubting in the least the holiness and the impending glorification of Fr. Seraphim, it is necessary to clarify that this information does not correspond to reality. An authoritative explanation on this matter is contained in the interview of His Grace Bishop Irenei of London and Western Europe, which can be read at the following link.

🔸 Bright Saturday - The Holy Kollyvades Fathers 🍚🔸

On the Saturday of Bright Week, we commemorate the Holy Fathers of the so-called “Kollyvades” movement. These monastics, primarily from Mount Athos, taught adherence to traditional Orthodox practices amid waves of westernization and secularism during the years of the Turkish occupation of Greece. In the mid-18th century, a debate arose on the Holy Mountain concerning memorial services for the departed, the frequency of Holy Communion, and other matters relating to the exact rules for observances within the Church.

The “Kollyvades” Fathers adhered to strict Orthodox tradition, and were opposed to unwarranted innovations regarding these matters. The starting-point for this controversy was the building of the Kyriakon at the Skete of Saint Anna in 1754. Debate arose as to whether the commemoration of the founders and benefactors should be held on Saturday or Sunday, and with what frequency the monks should receive Holy Communion.

In accordance with longstanding Orthodox tradition, the Kollyvades insisted that memorial services should not be performed on Sundays, the day of the Lord’s Resurrection, but on Saturday, the traditional day for commemoration of the dead, since Christ lay in the tomb on Saturday. These Fathers were mockingly dubbed ‘kollyvades’ after the kollyva (the sweetened boiled wheat served at memorial services).

The Kollyvades movement - led by Saints Makarios Notaras, Nikodemos the Hagiorite and Athanasios of Paros - strove for a rediscovery of Patristic theology and a liturgical life that included frequent communion, and a return to the precepts preached by the Hesychasts of the 14th century. Thus, the name of ‘kollyvas’ became a title of honor, and the movement was responsible for a beneficial regeneration of Orthodox tradition.

The movement came under assault by many at Mount Athos and elsewhere. In 1776, Fr Athanasios of Paros was even condemned as a heretic, defrocked, and excommunicated by Patriarch Sophronius II. In 1981, Patriarch Gabriel IV and the Holy Synod found the charges against Athanasius absurd and unfounded, and so he was restored to his priestly rank.
