Vocation is not only about career or about calling as something reserved for a few special people. It is about the whole of life offered back to God.

Some lives seem to follow one clear path of service. Others feel more like a collection of odds and ends—work, relationships, disappointments, gifts, responsibilities, and unexpected invitations. But God can receive all of it.

The question is simple and searching:

How can I offer this life of mine to you, Lord?

Did Jesus practice work-life balance?

Maybe not in the way we talk about it today. But the Gospels show us a pattern in Jesus’ life: identity, ministry, prayer, solitude, belonging, worship, and rest.

In this week’s At the Table post, Keith Anderson reflects on the deeply human practices that nourished Jesus—and how they invite us to pay attention to our own need for God, community, and quiet places of belonging.

Jesus rejoiced and celebrated with so many people because he knew what his Father was doing in their midst—he was, in and through his life, living out God’s compassionate rescuing, mending, and resurrecting work.

On the road to Emmaus, Jesus walked with Cleopas and his friend before they recognized him. But at the table—through bread blessed, broken, and given—their eyes were opened.

A Shared Life reminds us that Jesus often reveals his presence in the relationships and ordinary places where we walk, listen, forgive, celebrate, and share life together.

We need others to companion us along the way—and we are invited to walk intentionally with others, helping them discover God’s gracious presence and activity in their lives.

Who are you truly walking with?

The best testimony to the truth of the gospel is the quality of our life together. Jesus risked his reputation and the credibility of his story by tying them to how his followers live and care for one another in community (John 17:20–23).

If we could cut through our complacency or despair, we might be shocked at what is really at stake here. The character of our shared life—as congregations, communities, and families—has the power to draw people to the kingdom or to push them away. How we live together is the most persuasive sermon we’ll ever get to preach

The faith taught to so many of us is a faith of individualism. It centers heavily on the transaction between Jesus and me. It rarely focuses on the idea of Jesus and us….

It was some of my Asian Christian friends who began to convince me that there was an entirely different way to understand the Bible: through the lens of community, God doing His work in our lives through one another. In other words, I cannot grow into what God wants me to be (and do) unless I am in tight formation with some others.

An NFL game.
An Ariat commercial.
And an unexpected reminder from the Apostle Paul.

“Don’t let the world tell you who you are.”

We are constantly surrounded by voices telling us who we should be, what gives us value, and where identity is found. But the words and ways of Jesus invite us into something deeper than a self-made life.

Keith Anderson reflects on Romans 12:2, cultural identity, and the sacred work of becoming who God created us to be.

Real growth rarely happens all at once.

It unfolds over time—through stages of paying attention, reflection, and shared life with others.

That’s why The Journey is designed as a guided process with three stages:

An Attentive Life
An Examined Life
A Shared Life

Each stage helps adults slow down, listen carefully, and grow alongside trusted companions.

If you're curious what this looks like in practice, we invite you to join us for a free online conversation: What is The Journey?

You’ll get a glimpse of how the process works—and how leaders are using it to create meaningful, lasting growth in their communities.

The Journey: Helping adults take a deep dive into their lives in the light of the stunning story of Jesus.
