One time, I saw a young man walking with his father in the parking lot of the masjid. The father was known to be a very good person, so I told his son how I pray to Allah for him to be like his father. When the father heard that, he became very upset, and told me to never make such du'a. He explained by saying how he, the father, did not know in which state he will die (meaning, the father may seem to be a good person today, but only Allah knows if he remains in that state until he dies, or if he becomes a corrupt person before his death). At the end, the father told to only pray for his son to be like someone whom we know has passed away in a righteous state.
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Do not be too surprised (or impressed) by a person's actions until you see on which state they died in. It is possible for someone to do good deeds for some time, and had he died upon it, he would enter Jannah. However, that person changes (later on), and does evil deeds (and then dies and enters the Hell Fire). (Similarly), it is possible for someone to do evil deeds for a period of time, and had he died upon it he would enter Hell Fire. However, that person changes (later on), and does good deeds (and then dies and enters Jannah).” [Reference: As-Silsilah As-Saheehah]
I pray to Allah to grant Shaykh Muhammad Al-Shareef the highest level of Jannah. His good deeds were very impressive, Allahumma barik. And based on what we know, he returned to Allah as a believer, and as someone who continuously sought to make this world a better place.
To Allah we belong and to Allah we shall return.
