Educators know they make a difference in the lives of their students. But what do we know about the difference that certain types of schools make as a whole? And can we gauge whether the Christian school sector delivers on the promises we make in our mission statements and portraits of a graduate?

The Cardus Education Survey offers a rigorous and detailed analysis of graduate outcomes that had previously been lacking.

There’s a question in my neck of the woods that catches many people off guard. When meeting someone for the first time, locals are notorious for replacing, “Hi, how are you?” with “Where did you go to high school?”

A few years ago, if you asked the graduates of our school where they went to high school, you would not have received a consistent answer.

Without careful attention, any organization, faith based or not, can move away from its stated mission.

Dan Beerens opened the door for me to Christian education.

Homer Allen, headmaster at New Covenant School in Arlington, MA, met Dan at a conference and told him about the “real work for real people” students were doing at Covenant—projects in which students learned content and skills as well as developed the character of Christ through the work that they did, not just in Bible classes and chapel. Dan told me that the kind of school Homer described was what he had dreamed about, but never actually saw in action.

Dan Beerens continues to be the hands and feet of Jesus. His legacy has been established in Christian schools and beyond.

My first encounter with Harbor Christian Academy was over seven years ago when some of their founding leaders stepped forward in courageous faith to plant an urban, Christian, classical school so youth in Houston could receive an excellent, God-centered, affordable education.

You might not know this, but Dan Beerens has been named an honorary Canadian by the hosts of the Every Square Centimetre Podcast, a podcast that celebrates Christian education in Canada and around the world.

As I reflect on his career devoted to Christian education, themes emerge that are worth celebrating. God gave Dan many gifts, and he shared them generously with others.

Pride impacts how we lead, including a tendency to push those we lead not for some higher cause but for the sake of our own vanity. This past summer I learned a valuable lesson about my own pride.

Over the past few months, CACE has been running a blog series to honor the outsized impact Dan Beerens has had on Christian schools around the world.

My introduction to Dan Beerens was as a sixth-grade transfer to Timothy Christian Schools where Dan was a young fourth-grade teacher, a colleague of my mother.

In many communities, where there is a disparity between the rich and the poor, the affluent are often expected to support the needy. However, the story is different in communities blessed by an Edify partner school.

It is an exciting time in the world of Christian education. Many schools are experiencing enrollment growth. But this advancement didn’t happen by chance. It has taken committed educators, thinkers, innovators, and dreamers to lead the way. I consider myself blessed and incredibly honored that one of them, Dan Beerens, is a friend and an advisor.

The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him;though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with his hand. Psalm 37:23-24 It is an exciting time in the world of Christian education. Many schools are experiencing enrollment growth. New schools are starting up in stat...

I find this year’s election season on the elevated side of emotion. So, with that mindset, how do we set the stage school-wide? How do we foster healthy dialogue appropriate for little ones to seniors at a K-12 school? How do we partner with Christian parents to cultivate critical thinking while also respecting the spectrum of views?

Any discussion of politics or theology held in my advisory group is to challenge the young men for the sake of their intellectual growth.
