6.2.26

In 2 Samuel 1, David receives the news of Jonathan’s and Saul’s deaths. Instead of triumph, he responds with lament, honoring both friend and foe. His grief reveals a heart that trusts God’s justice rather than seizing vindication for himself.

“Then David took hold of his clothes and tore them, and so did all the men who were with him. And they mourned and wept and fasted until evening for Saul and for Jonathan his son and for the people of the Lord and for the house of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword.” 2 Samuel 1:11-12 ESV

We should trust God’s justice - yes, even with those who try to destroy us - rather than seeking vengeance ourselves.

5.31.26

“Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down and cut off your head. And I will give the dead bodies of the host of the Philistines this day to the birds of the air and to the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, and that all this assembly may know that the Lord saves not with sword and spear. For the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give you into our hand.”” 1 Samuel 17:45-47 ESV

We come in the name of the Lord, not our own.
He will fight our battles.
Our motivation needs to be that all know He is God of all. If we are hoping to get glory, our motives are misplaced.

5.30.26

“And David said, “The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you!”” 1 Samuel 17:37 ESV

David knew from experience that God would be with him. Every small battle is preparation for the next larger one and gives us assurance of God’s presence.

5.28.26

““This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” John 15:12-13 ESV

We are to love each other the way Jesus loved us - willing to lay down our very lives if necessary.

5.27.26

““I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.” John 15:1-2 ESV

A dear friend and mentor answers the question of how he is doing with, “I’m fine on the Vine.” 91 year old Rev. Marvin Lee knows the True Vine, the source of our existence. And he understands that we are sometimes pruned in order to be more fruitful. Let us learn this lesson as well.

5.26.26

“But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”” 1 Samuel 16:7 ESV

5.25.26

In our troubled world today, we need the peace that only Jesus can give.

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” John 14:27 ESV

Another version says it this way.

““I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.” John 14:27 NLT
