Epiphany 2
Epiphany 2 focuses on readings about Christ's manifestation, often featuring John the Baptist identifying Jesus as the Lamb of God. Although we may see it as “down-time” between Christmas and Lent, we use the season of Epiphany to think about the ways Jesus appears in our lives every day – through a kindness done by us or for us, through the way we attend to another’s needs and see our own needs filled. We see the love of God flow through us, from us, and to us.

This Sunday we celebrate the Baptism of Jesus. For Lutherans, the Baptism of Jesus is crucial as it inaugurated His public ministry, consecrated Him as the Messiah with the Father's voice and the Spirit's anointing. It sanctified all water for Baptism, making it God's powerful means for forgiving sins, granting new life, and joining believers to Christ's death and resurrection, thus establishing the foundation for the saving grace He offers all through His own sacred act.

The Advent wreath typically consists of four candles, representing the four weeks of Advent, encircled by evergreen branches symbolizing eternal life in Christ.
The first candle, often referred to as the "hope" candle, represents the eager anticipation and longing for the coming of Christ.
The second candle, known as the "peace" candle, signifies the inner calm and tranquility that Christ brings into our lives.
The third candle, the "joy" candle, represents the overwhelming happiness that fills our hearts as we draw closer to the birth of Christ.
The fourth candle, the "love" candle, symbolizes the unconditional love that God has for humanity, demonstrated through the gift of His son.
The white candle, the Christ candle, signifies the birth of Christ.
As each candle is lit, the light grows brighter, mirroring the increasing anticipation and joy as Christmas approaches.

Easter 2 Thoughts
Imagine the wonder of the moment when the disciples were gathered in fear, and Jesus appeared among them and gave them the thing they needed most in that hour – his peace – himself. Then He sent them out to deliver his peace to others. He gave them his authority to forgive sins, an act which brings great peace.

Now imagine that he has just appeared to you. You, too, have been offered Christ and sent with His peace and forgiveness for others.

Holy Week
Holy Week is the most sacred week in the liturgical year in Christianity. The Triduum, or Three Evenings, will begin with Maundy Thursday, continue with Good Friday, extend through the Vigil of Saturday evening, and come to a conclusion on Easter Sunday.

Please join us for each service:

Maundy Thursday 7 PM
The term “Maundy” comes from the Latin “mandatum”; it is from a verb that means “to give” or “to order” — command. After Jesus and the disciples finished the Last Supper and walked toward Gethsemane, Jesus taught them a new commandment — “I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another” (John 13:34).

The Last Supper
On the first Maundy Thursday, after they had eaten, Jesus gave the disciples his body and blood together with the bread and wine for the forgiveness of their sins.

Stripping of the altar
After Holy Communion is celebrated, we will “strip the altar,” which symbolizes the abandonment of Jesus by his disciples and the stripping of Jesus by the soldiers before his crucifixion. It represents the humiliation of Jesus and the consequences of sin as a preparation for the celebration of new life. Psalm 22 will be read while the paraments are being removed.

Choir Selection
Jimmy will lead the choir in a special selection, “Will You Watch with Me One Hour,” (words and music by Larry Shackley).

Maundy Thursday Soup and Sandwich Meal
We will offer a soup and Sandwich meal before worship at 6 PM.

Good Friday Tenebrae (Latin for “shadows” or “darkness”)
Tenebrae will be held the evening of Good Friday at 7 PM and includes the gradual dimming of the lights and extinguishing of candles. The Christ candle is removed from the sanctuary and a concluding “Strepitus” or loud noise (slamming shut the Bible) symbolizes the earthquake and agony of creation at the death of Christ.

This Sunday marks the Baptism of Our Lord, and we are given witness to the presence of all three persons of the Holy Trinity. Jesus, the Son, comes up out of the baptismal waters. The Holy Spirit descends from the heavens like a dove. God, the Father, speaks with both love and satisfaction. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—the Holy Trinity, the fullness of the Godhead—there with John the baptizer at the river Jordon. Here is an incident you can recall and give witness if anyone should question the presence of the Holy Trinity in scripture.

Good Friday is an austere time of reflection. We will gather on Good Friday to celebrate the Lord’s sacrifice on the cross. Join us at 7 pm.

Palm Sunday is now, for Christians, entrance into Holy Week, the holiest week in the church year. During this week, we are invited to join Jesus in the Upper Room on Maundy Thursday when he instituted the sacrament of Holy Communion, the very gift of his body and blood, that nourishes and strengths our faith. On Good Friday, we accompany our Savior through his arrest, trial, and crucifixion: the Passion of Jesus, which for us brings God’s gifts of forgiveness and life.

Please join us for all services this week:
Palm Sunday
Worship at 9:30 am. We will meet in the Gathering area.
