Seven months after Hurricane Melissa devastated Jamaica, recovery efforts are still ongoing and the response from the worldwide brotherhood has been extraordinary. Thanks to the incredible generosity of the brotherhood, CBMC has been able to respond swiftly to the many needs that have arisen.

This incredible generosity following the disaster appeal, resulted in over $300,000 USD ($400,000 CAD) in collected donations. Read about the recovery work underway, including Sister Jeanette’s joy at receiving a new mattress and water tank providing reliable access to clean water: https://cbma.net/news/after-hurricane-melissa-an-update/

Our dear sister Murl Marshall, a long-time member of the Bank Hall ecclesia in Barbados, fell asleep in the Lord on January 28, 2026. Sister Murl was in her 90th year at her death (October 4, 1936 to January 28, 2026). She spent several years in the UK, where she was a well-respected Sunday school teacher, before returning to Barbados. All those who met Sister Murl went away impressed with her knowledge of the Scriptures and, most of all, her love for her God.

Brother David Corbin from NY, who affectionately called sister Murl his Aunt, performed the service. He reminded us that we are to number our days, that death is a reminder of where we will all end up, and so we need to prepare now for our Master’s return. This event was sister Murl’s firm hope. Our sister now rests in the hope of the resurrection.

One month to the day of Sis Murl’s falling asleep in Christ, the Barbados Bank Hall ecclesia rejoiced to witness a new “born life” with the baptism of Mr. Dru Downes.

Brother Dru, after a good confession of his faith, was baptized in Brandons Beach by Brethren Rudolph Bailey and Clive Walton. Brother Dru was introduced to the Christadelphians by Sister Chiara Hunte and went through first principles classes with Brother Anthony and Sister Dawn Hunte.

We thank our loving God that His gospel message is still calling out a people for His name.

We pray our new brother and all the brothers and sisters in Barbados will mutually benefit from their fellowship together as they await our Lord’s return.

https://thehighcalling.net/

The June issue of The High Calling is here! https://thehighcalling.net/

Available in 10 languages to reach and uplift even more of our brothers and sisters around the world: English, French, Spanish, Dutch, Filipino, Urdu, Swahili, Farsi, Portuguese and Chichewa.

The High Calling is an online magazine, available because of the collaboration between The Tidings, The Christadelphian, and Glad Tidings magazines with sponsorship provided by the Christadelphian Bible Mission groups. The spread of the gospel in the first century involved each person being able to hear and understand the words of truth in their own tongue (Acts 2:8). While we don’t have access to the Spirit gift of tongues today, we acknowledge that our goal must be to invest in the translated word. The High Calling is produced by a team of brothers and sisters who are dedicated to serving you. https://thehighcalling.net/

In this final post from our visit to Jamaica following Hurricane Melissa, we come to Round Hill, a community well known to many and one that has welcomed visitors for years. The impact of the storm here was a sobering reminder of how vulnerable even well-established communities can be.

As we close this series, we want to thank you for walking with us through these updates and for the generosity and care shown to our brothers and sisters across Jamaica. We are still accepting donations and if you feel it in your heart to give, please do so here: https://cbma.net/donate/

The final stop on our post-hurricane tour of Jamaica was Round Hill. This little community is often the first place a Christadelphian will think of in Jamaica as it’s welcomed so many visitors over the years. Perched on a hillside with spectacular views overlooking the valley below and the Caribbean Sea to the south, this was another place we were amazed wasn’t blown away entirely. Like everywhere else, the believers told us how terrible Melissa was as it raged around them. Water poured into their homes from the torrential rain, which also washed away the road leaving behind huge craters and potholes, making access in and out very difficult for a time. By the time we visited, the road had--somewhat miraculously-- been paved with beautiful smooth asphalt, but the edges of it are already starting to crumble again as good drainage isn’t in place. So it goes in Round Hill.

We found Sis Joy cleaning up in and around her house. She lost a sizable portion of her zinc roof, and she and her family were doing the work to shore up their walls to support a concrete slab roof that they hoped to make repairs with. With your support, we’ve provided funds for the roofing materials so they can get this taken care of as soon as possible and move back into their home again. She says “I want to thank you very much. May God continue to bless and keep you always. Thanks again to you all.”

The efforts of those impacted by Hurricane Melissa to get back to normal will continue for a long time. We’ve highlighted just a few of the ways we’ve been able to support our brothers and sisters in Jamaica and they’re all so thankful for the love, care and concern shown to them by the worldwide brotherhood. It’s such a gift that we have from our God in each other.

I'll leave you with the words of Bro Marlon:

“Thank you so much my sis and all the rest. I don't have words to express my gratitude. May God bless you all continually…Thanks again for your prayers and great kindness.”
