Scripture’s warning against anger at God.
Job 15:12 - 13
Why does your heart carry you away?
Why do your eyes flash with such anger?
Why do you turn your spirit against God?
Why do you allow such words to pour out of your mouth?
Anger at God matters. It questions His goodness and wisdom. It blinds us to His purposes and opens the door to further sin. Scripture treats this posture as dangerous and self-destructive.
Psalm 37:8 - 10
Let go of anger and abandon rage.
Do not fret—it leads only to evil.
For evildoers will be cut off,
but those who hope in the Lord will inherit the earth.
After a little while the wicked will be no more.
When you search for them at their place, they are not there.
Proverbs 19:2 - 3
Zeal without knowledge is certainly not good,
and a person who acts hastily sins.
A person's own foolishness undermines his way,
but his heart rages against the Lord.
Isaiah 45:9 - 12
Woe to anyone who argues against the potter who formed him.
He is just a potsherd among the broken pieces of pottery on the ground.
Does clay say to its potter, “What are you making?
Your work looks like something made by a potter with no hands”?
Woe to anyone who says to his father, “What have you fathered?”
or to a woman, “What are you giving birth to?”
This is what the Lord says,
the Holy One of Israel, who formed Israel.
Do you wish to question me concerning things to come?
Will you give me orders about my children
and about the work of my hands?
I myself made the earth,
and I created Adam upon it.
With my hands I stretched out the heavens,
and I commanded all their army.
Numbers 11:1 - 3
The people were complaining about their hardships so that the Lord heard it. When the Lord heard it, his anger burned. So the Lord's fire burned among them and consumed some of the outskirts of the camp. The people cried out to Moses, and Moses prayed to the Lord. So the fire died down. They named that place Taberah, because the Lord's fire burned among them.
Jonah 4:4 [ Study this book carefully. ]
But the Lord replied, “Is it right for you to be angry?”
Habakkuk 2:4
Look, his soul is puffed up and is not righteous within him [ the unrighteous man. The Babylonians.]
—but the righteous one will live by his faith. [Faith, trust, faithfulness to God.]
Romans 9:19 - 24
Then you will say to me, “Why does God still find fault? For who has ever succeeded in resisting his will?” But who are you, a mere human being, to talk back to God? Shall the thing that is formed say to the one who formed it, “Why did you make me like this?” No. Doesn't the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay one pot for special use and another for ordinary use?
What if God, although he wanted to demonstrate his wrath and make his power known, endured with great patience the objects of wrath—ripe for destruction? And what if he did this to make the riches of his glory known to the objects of mercy whom he prepared in advance for glory, including us, whom he called—not only from the Jews but also from the Gentiles.
James 1:19 - 21
Remember this, my dear brothers: Let everyone be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry. Certainly, a man's anger does not bring about what is right before God. So after getting rid of all moral filthiness and overflowing wickedness, receive with humility the word planted in you. It is able to save your souls.
1 Peter 1:6 - 9
Therefore humble yourselves under God's powerful hand so that he may lift you up at the appointed time. Cast all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you. Have sound judgment. Be alert. Your adversary, the Devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. Resist him by being firm in the faith. You know that the same kinds of sufferings are being laid on your brotherhood all over the world.
Jude 14 - 16
Enoch, the seventh from Adam, also prophesied about these people, saying, “Look, the Lord is going to come with tens of thousands of his holy ones, to execute judgment against all of them and to convict every soul concerning all their ungodly deeds, which they did in an ungodly way, and concerning all the harsh words that ungodly sinners spoke against him.” These are discontented grumblers, who walk according to their lusts, and their mouths speak boastful things as they flatter others to take advantage of them.
Revelation 16:7 - 11
And I heard the incense altar, saying, “Yes, Lord God Almighty, true and just are your judgments.”
The fourth angel poured out his bowl on the sun, and it was allowed to burn people with fire. People were scorched by the fierce heat. Then they blasphemed the name of God, who had authority over these plagues, but they did not repent and give him praise.
The fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast. The beast's kingdom was darkened. People gnawed their tongues in their torment. They blasphemed the God of heaven because of their torments and their sores. But they did not repent of their deeds.
Warning: The circumstances of this fallen world can cause complaints against to arise within you. The remedy is to surrender to God’s plan. To trust Him to be good and just. Learn to praise His goodness and this can replace bitterness in your hearts.
Practical heart checks
“Am I demanding explanations of God or trusting His revealed character?”
“Do my words to God, about God drip with gratitude or grumbling?”
“When trails hit, do I recall God’s past faithfulness?”
“When difficulties occur, do I cling to God’s promises?”
