Ephesians 4:31-32 - Stop being mean, bad-tempered, and angry. Quarreling, harsh words, and dislike of others should have no place in your lives. Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God has forgiven you because you belong to Christ. Our words and our attitudes should be a reflection of Jesus in our lives. We should not be condemning others as many are prone to do but giving life to others. Our lives should be different because we are different after believing on Jesus. The apostle writes in another letter these interesting thoughts. So ever since we first heard about you we have kept on praying and asking God to help you understand what he wants you to do; asking him to make you wise about spiritual things; and asking that the way you live will always please the Lord and honor him, so that you will always be doing good, kind things for others, while all the time you are learning to know God better and better. Amen.

Ephesians 4:30 - Don't cause the Holy Spirit sorrow by the way you live. Remember, he is the one who marks you to be present on that day when salvation from sin will be complete. We know the Holy Spirit lives within those who believe on Jesus. His presence can be rejoicing or sorrowing as a result of how we live daily. He has been with us from the beginning of our journey toward heaven. The apostle reminds us to obey only the Holy Spirit's instructions. He will tell you where to go and what to do, and then you won't always be doing the wrong things your evil nature wants you to. For we naturally love to do evil things that are just the opposite from the things that the Holy Spirit tells us to do; and the good things we want to do when the Spirit has his way with us are just the opposite of our natural desires. These two forces within us are constantly fighting each other to win control over us, and our wishes are never free from their pressures. When the Holy Spirit controls our lives he will produce this kind of fruit in us: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. If we are living now by the Holy Spirit's power, let us follow the Holy Spirit's leading in every part of our lives. Then we will have joy in the Holy Spirit's presence instead of sorrow. Amen.

Ephesians 4:28-29 - If anyone is stealing he must stop it and begin using those hands of his for honest work so he can give to others in need. Don't use bad language. Say only what is good and helpful to those you are talking to, and what will give them a blessing. We know stealing is taking away from others. Being honest in working is the beginning of a change from taking to giving when it comes to an employer. Then it can also lead to being in a position to help others from the results of honest working. This honest work can be a blessing in so many lives rather than stealing which leads to being a curse against others. Another example is bad language tears others down but good language used in the right way can build others up. This is another opportunity to be a blessing to others rather than a curse to them. Jesus said you have heard that it was said, you shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy. But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. Amen.

Ephesians 4:25-27 - Stop lying to each other; tell the truth, for we are parts of each other and when we lie to each other we are hurting ourselves. If you are angry, don't sin by nursing your grudge. Don't let the sun go down with you still angry--get over it quickly; for when you are angry, you give a mighty foothold to the devil. As we see here we must replace lying and anger with truth and grace. The terrible truth about our anger is that it gives the devil opportunity to gain territory in our lives involving our minds if we allow the anger to continue unchecked. We can overcome anger by extending grace toward others just as we have experienced from God. The apostle wrote beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord. Therefore if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head. Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. Amen.

Ephesians 4:23-24 - Now your attitudes and thoughts must all be constantly changing for the better. Yes, you must be a new and different person, holy and good. Clothe yourself with this new nature. We should be changed people. We need to be new people in thoughts and in deeds. For example the apostle John writes let us practice loving each other, for love comes from God and those who are loving and kind show that they are the children of God, and that they are getting to know him better. But if a person isn't loving and kind, it shows that he doesn't know God--for God is love. God showed how much he loved us by sending his only Son into this wicked world to bring to us eternal life through his death. In this act we see what real love is: it is not our love for God but his love for us when he sent his Son to satisfy God's anger against our sins. Dear friends, since God loved us as much as that, we surely ought to love each other too. For though we have never yet seen God, when we love each other God lives in us, and his love within us grows ever stronger. And he has put his own Holy Spirit into our hearts as a proof to us that we are living with him and he with us. Amen.

Ephesians 4:20-22 - But that isn't the way Christ taught you! If you have really heard his voice and learned from him the truths concerning himself, then throw off your old evil nature--the old you that was a partner in your evil ways--rotten through and through, full of lust and shame. Christ has taught us to live a changed life not the same sinful way that He found us. He often said go and sin no more. We have a responsibility to receive His good and cast out the evil we lived with in the past. John the apostle writes this is the message God has given us to pass on to you: that God is Light and in him is no darkness at all. So if we say we are his friends but go on living in spiritual darkness and sin, we are lying. But if we are living in the light of God's presence, just as Christ does, then we have wonderful fellowship and joy with each other, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from every sin. Amen.

Ephesians 4:17-19 - Let me say this, then, speaking for the Lord: Live no longer as the unsaved do, for they are blinded and confused. Their closed hearts are full of darkness; they are far away from the life of God because they have shut their minds against him, and they cannot understand his ways. They don't care anymore about right and wrong and have given themselves over to impure ways. They stop at nothing, being driven by their evil minds and reckless lusts. Our lives as believers should not look anything like unbelievers are. They have no connection to God but we do. They live apart from God as sinners but we shouldn't. The apostle further writes God has not called us to be dirty-minded and full of lust but to be holy and clean. If anyone refuses to live by these rules, he is not disobeying the rules of men but of God who gives his Holy Spirit to you. Amen.

Ephesians 4:14-16 - Then we will no longer be like children, forever changing our minds about what we believe because someone has told us something different or has cleverly lied to us and made the lie sound like the truth. Instead, we will lovingly follow the truth at all times--speaking truly, dealing truly, living truly--and so become more and more in every way like Christ who is the Head of his body, the Church. Under his direction, the whole body is fitted together perfectly, and each part in its own special way helps the other parts, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love. Our purpose is to grow up and become more like Christ. As Christ followers we are identified by living according to the truth. We want to help each other become everything we can be in Christ. The apostle writes God has given each of us the ability to do certain things well. So if God has given you the ability to prophesy, then prophesy whenever you can--as often as your faith is strong enough to receive a message from God. If your gift is serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, do a good job of teaching. If you are a preacher, see to it that your sermons are strong and helpful. If God has given you money, be generous in helping others with it. If God has given you administrative ability and put you in charge of the work of others, take the responsibility seriously. Those who offer comfort to the sorrowing should do so with Christian cheer. Don't just pretend that you love others: really love them. Hate what is wrong. Stand on the side of the good. Love each other with brotherly affection and take delight in honoring each other. Never be lazy in your work, but serve the Lord enthusiastically. Amen.

Ephesians 4:12-13 - Why is it that he gives us these special abilities to do certain things best? It is that God's people will be equipped to do better work for him, building up the Church, the body of Christ, to a position of strength and maturity; until finally we all believe alike about our salvation and about our Savior, God's Son, and all become full-grown in the Lord--yes, to the point of being filled full with Christ. As we can see these specialized workers help God's people grow up in strength and in maturity to be all they can be in Christ. As God's people serve in the kingdom so the group benefits from it by increasing. The apostle comments further in another letter, God gives us many kinds of special abilities, but it is the same Holy Spirit who is the source of them all. There are different kinds of service to God, but it is the same Lord we are serving. There are many ways in which God works in our lives, but it is the same God who does the work in and through all of us who are his. The Holy Spirit displays God's power through each of us as a means of helping the entire church. Amen.

Ephesians 4:11 - Some of us have been given special ability as apostles; to others he has given the gift of being able to preach well; some have special ability in winning people to Christ, helping them to trust him as their Savior; still others have a gift for caring for God's people as a shepherd does his sheep, leading and teaching them in the ways of God. As we can see Jesus has equipped some of His people to do certain activities in reaching out to others and in training others in His kingdom. Through these efforts the kingdom continues to grow. The ministry ordained for this work is the church as Jesus indicated with these words. Upon this rock I will build my church; and all the powers of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven; whatever doors you lock on earth shall be locked in heaven; and whatever doors you open on earth shall be open in heaven! Amen.

Ephesians 4:8-10 - The psalmist tells about this, for he says that when Christ returned triumphantly to heaven after his resurrection and victory over Satan, he gave generous gifts to men. Notice that it says he returned to heaven. This means that he had first come down from the heights of heaven, far down to the lowest parts of the earth. The same one who came down is the one who went back up, that he might fill all things everywhere with himself, from the very lowest to the very highest. As the apostle states Jesus came from heaven to earth to take His place in Mary's womb. Then He fulfilled God's plan of salvation. Afterward He returned to heaven to fulfill the purpose of equipping us for His work in His kingdom. Now we carry on the work He started here. Jesus told his disciples, I have been given all authority in heaven and earth. Therefore go and make disciples in all nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and then teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you; and be sure of this--that I am with you always, even to the end of the world. Amen.
