Daniel 4:1-3 - This is the proclamation of Nebuchadnezzar the king, which he sent to people of every language in every nation of the world: Greetings: I want you all to know about the strange thing that the Most High God did to me. It was incredible--a mighty miracle! And now I know for sure that his kingdom is everlasting; he reigns forever and ever. As we have read this decree was published by the king for everyone in his realm to know. He made it in every language for all people to understand. He is witnessing to everyone what God did in his life. This is a miracle when someone like him seeks to share the truth about God's work in his life. This king thought of himself as great and his kingdom as supreme because he built it. But now he sees God as supreme and His kingdom is the best. How did this man become so convinced of this change? This proclamation will explain it. Only God could bring about a drastic change like this involving someone so headstrong. The only example comparable to this involves the well known apostle concerning his former life as a persecutor of Christians. He explains I used to believe that I ought to do many horrible things to the followers of Jesus of Nazareth. I imprisoned many of the saints in Jerusalem, as authorized by the High Priests; and when they were condemned to death, I cast my vote against them. I used torture to try to make Christians everywhere curse Christ. I was so violently opposed to them that I even hounded them in distant cities in foreign lands. I was on such a mission to Damascus, armed with the authority and commission of the chief priests, when one day about noon, sir, a light from heaven brighter than the sun shone down on me and my companions. We all fell down, and I heard a voice speaking to me in Hebrew, Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me? You are only hurting yourself. Who are you, sir? I asked. And the Lord replied, I am Jesus, the one you are persecuting. Now stand up! For I have appeared to you to appoint you as my servant and my witness. You are to tell the world about this experience and about the many other occasions when I shall appear to you. And I will protect you from both your own people and the Gentiles. Yes, I am going to send you to the Gentiles to open their eyes to their true condition so that they may repent and live in the light of God instead of in Satan's darkness, so that they may receive forgiveness for their sins and God's inheritance along with all people everywhere whose sins are cleansed away, who are set apart by faith in me. And so, O King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to that vision from heaven! Amen.

Daniel 3:30 - Then the king gave promotions to Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, so that they prospered greatly there in the province of Babylon. The enemies of these three were probably frustrated more than ever when these three got promoted instead of eliminated. How does it happen that men like this get higher positions in the realm of Babylon? The only answer is that God has shone His hand and it is on these men for their good. David writes day by day the Lord observes the good deeds done by godly men, and gives them eternal rewards. He cares for them when times are hard; even in famine, they will have enough. Amen.

Daniel 3:28-29 - Then Nebuchadnezzar said, blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, for he sent his angel to deliver his trusting servants when they defied the king's commandment and were willing to die rather than serve or worship any god except their own. Therefore, I make this decree, that any person of any nation, language, or religion who speaks a word against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego shall be torn limb from limb and his house knocked into a heap of rubble. For no other God can do what this one does. How easily this king reverses his position concerning these three men and the God of Israel! He was ready to execute them and tried to do just that. But when God delivered them he now becomes their greatest advocate. His threat in the form of this decree against anyone opposing the God of Israel represented by these three is very severe. Now these men have a new level of respect in his court with those opponents seeking their downfall looking quite small. Jesus said don't be afraid of those who threaten you. For the time is coming when the truth will be revealed: their secret plots will become public information. What I tell you now in the gloom, shout abroad when daybreak comes. What I whisper in your ears, proclaim from the housetops! These men now have the freedom to testify even more about their God to everyone in the kingdom just like Jesus talked about. Amen.

Daniel 3:26-27 - Then Nebuchadnezzar came as close as he could to the open door of the flaming furnace and yelled: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, servants of the Most High God! Come out! Come here! So they stepped out of the fire. Then the princes, governors, captains, and counselors crowded around them and saw that the fire hadn't touched them--not a hair of their heads was singed; their coats were unscorched, and they didn't even smell of smoke! It is interesting that the king can only get within a certain distance of the flame in order to call out to these three. In calling them out he addresses them as servants of God. The court of the king was filled with eyewitnesses to this miracle and they all had to examine these men who didn't suffer any effects from the fire. This king had said to them prior to this baptism by fire, what god can deliver you out of my hands? Now he knows what God can do this and these men belong to Him. Jesus said don't be afraid of those who can kill only your bodies--but can't touch your souls! These men certainly didn't fear the king's threats and they have lived to tell about it. God is certainly giving this king much to think about involving dreams and encounters with a divine being in the fire besides these men which serve God fearlessly. The hope is that he will finally humble himself before the Most High God which he has not done yet. Amen.

Daniel 3:24-25 - But suddenly, as he was watching, Nebuchadnezzar jumped up in amazement and exclaimed to his advisors, didn't we throw three men into the furnace? Yes, they said, we did indeed, your Majesty. Well, look! Nebuchadnezzar shouted. I see four men, unbound, walking around in the fire, and they aren't even hurt by the flames! And the fourth looks like a god! This king is amazed to see that the number of men in the fire has increased. The fourth man is supernatural in appearance and power which he can actually see. God has chosen to do what these men said He could do if He wanted to. Their faith in the God of Israel is definitely being rewarded. This fire is real for the soldiers tasked with throwing them in have died but these men have not died. Only God could do this. Daniel's praise of God from a previous chapter is worth repeating at this moment. Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, for he alone has all wisdom and all power. World events are under his control. He removes kings and sets others on their thrones. He gives wise men their wisdom and scholars their intelligence. He reveals profound mysteries beyond man's understanding. He knows all hidden things, for he is light, and darkness is no obstacle to him. Let us trust Him with our lives every day as these men chose to do long ago! Amen.

Daniel 3:19-23 - Then Nebuchadnezzar was filled with fury and his face became dark with anger at Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. He commanded that the furnace be heated up seven times hotter than usual, and called for some of the strongest men of his army to bind Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, and throw them into the fire. So they bound them tight with ropes and threw them into the furnace, fully clothed. And because the king, in his anger, had demanded such a hot fire in the furnace, the flames leaped out and killed the soldiers as they threw them in! So Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego fell down bound into the roaring flames. As we can see this king is incensed by their answer and increases his order. Those tasked with fulfilling his order die in carrying it out. Of course this removes all doubt that the fire is real and extremely life threatening when these three are thrown into it. Their actions remind us of what is coming in the future as expressed in the book of Revelation. Anyone who can hear, listen carefully: The people of God who are destined for prison will be arrested and taken away; those destined for death will be killed. But do not be dismayed, for here is your opportunity for endurance and confidence. Let this encourage God's people to endure patiently every trial and persecution, for they are his saints who remain firm to the end in obedience to his commands and trust in Jesus. Jesus said if you cling to your life, you will lose it; but if you give it up for me, you will save it. Amen!

Daniel 3:16-18 - Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego replied, O Nebuchadnezzar, we are not worried about what will happen to us. If we are thrown into the flaming furnace, our God is able to deliver us; and he will deliver us out of your hand, Your Majesty. But if he doesn't, please understand, sir, that even then we will never under any circumstance serve your gods or worship the gold statue you have erected. Their courage and faith in this extreme threat can't be denied. They can't predict what God will do in this situation. God will do what brings Him glory. They will remain faithful to God in spite of the danger. Jesus said not one sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it. And the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don't worry! You are more valuable to him than many sparrows. Amen.

Daniel 3:13-15 - Then Nebuchadnezzar, in a terrible rage, ordered Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego to be brought in before him. Is it true, O Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, he demanded, that you are refusing to serve my gods or to worship the gold statue I set up? I'll give you one more chance. When the music plays, if you fall down and worship the statue, all will be well. But if you refuse, you will be thrown into a flaming furnace within the hour. And what god can deliver you out of my hands then? This king has a violent temper and was furious that his order did not get followed by these three. He puts them on the spot and threatens them with a severe command. His expectation is that his ultimatum will cause them to compromise. He thinks they have no way out. Jesus said when you are arrested, don't worry about what to say at your trial, for you will be given the right words at the right time. For it won't be you doing the talking--it will be the Spirit of your heavenly Father speaking through you! Don't be afraid of those who can kill only your bodies--but can't touch your souls! Fear only God who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Amen.

Daniel 3:9-12 - Your Majesty, they said to him, you made a law that everyone must fall down and worship the gold statue when the band begins to play, and that anyone who refuses will be thrown into a flaming furnace. But there are some Jews out there--Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, whom you have put in charge of Babylonian affairs--who have defied you, refusing to serve your gods or to worship the gold statue you set up. The informers report that there are these three Jews not conforming to the king's command. These informers seem to shame the king concerning the fact that he appointed them to serve in the affairs of the country and now they do this. These informers are poking at the king to get him angry over these Jews with the hope that they may be done away with. There is no respect or kindness for the Jews in Babylon. Jesus said the world would love you if you belonged to it; but you don't--for I chose you to come out of the world, and so it hates you. Do you remember what I told you? A slave isn't greater than his master! So since they persecuted me, naturally they will persecute you. And if they had listened to me, they would listen to you! The people of the world will persecute you because you belong to me, for they don't know God who sent me. Amen.

Daniel 3:8 - But some officials went to the king and accused some of the Jews of refusing to worship! This is a very interesting report. It was obvious who remained standing when the crowd laid flat on the ground. Of course the animosity towards the Jews in the kingdom is obvious. No one wants to see them succeed so this is a great opportunity to get them done away with. According to this report it would seem that other Jews present at this ceremony did not resist the command to worship the image just like others did not resist the food served them unlike Daniel and his three friends. The apostle wrote those who decide to please Christ Jesus by living godly lives will suffer at the hands of those who hate him. Persecution like this is real in many places as those who follow Christ continue to be singled out today for punishment. Let us be faithful to the Lord Jesus Christ in spite of the cost for doing so. Amen.
