On this Earth Day – April 22 – the Potomac Valley Section applauds the work of NAACP’s initiative and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, both of which are committing to continue the fight for environmental and climate justice for Black communities. Every community deserves clean air, clean water, and a healthy environment. We must continue to fight industrial pollution in our communities, strains on our water and energy systems, and the rising costs of energy and health bills that plague our people. Earth Day 2026 – Our power, Our planet!

On this International Women’s Day, we celebrate the progress in women’s rights and human rights over the past 115 years, but we continue to face significant challenges. Between May and August 2025, over 300,000 Black women in the US left or were pushed out of the labor force. Working with our partners, how can we use our platform to help women who have been affected regain economic power and financial security? Let’s work together to make a difference!

Did you know that as of 2025, Maryland achieved the status for the highest percentage of Black women in state legislative roles nationwide? One of those women was Del. Adrienne Jones who was the first woman and first African American to serve as the Speaker of Maryland’s House of Delegates. She served as Speaker from 2019 – 2025 when she resigned from the role, but she continues to serve as a Delegate. Del. Jones was applauded for her steady leadership, for championing major legislation on police reform and reproductive rights, as well as major funding for HBCUs. She began service as a Delegate in 1997 and served for 17 years as speaker pro tem. Del. Jones is a trailblazer and we honor her contributions! PVS celebrates Women's History Month!
