Thank you members of Sligo for collecting 550 bags of food to make Holiday Food Baskets for our neighbors! Adventist Community Services was asked (by MOCO) to take on 200 extra families for Thanksgiving that could not find a pantry to assist them!

KEN FLEMMER IS RETIRING! How are we going to manage without his long term dedication? Ken has directed ACSGW for years and helped put us "on the map" as one of the best, most responsive charitable service organizations in the County, with it's food pantry, learning center, diaper distribution, healthy child nutrition program, youth development projects, emergency response, and many other successful endeavors that help those in the community in need! He will be sorely missed!

A MOTHER'S DAY STORY: ONE PIECE OF CANDY This morning an expecting single mother came in to ask for food. Since there was a lull in activity, a worker stepped up to register her immed. instead of by phone the following day (SOP). As the woman walked by me to enroll I handed her a piece of Godiva candy from a stash we had on hand and wished her a Happy Mother's Day. She broke down in tears. “This is the only gift I got for Mother’s day”! One little piece of chocolate to heal an invisible pain. Acts of kindess like this are made possible by your support! ACSGW IS INVESTED IN YOUTH DEVELOPMENT. A new program to help students get ahead has been running for several weeks at ACSGW. Volunteer tutors are helping students from kindergarten to 7th grade learn or sharpen computer skills and other subject matter!

THIS MAY AFFECT ACSGW: The end of the Covid-19 public health emergency (PHE) officially expires on May 11th. With it comes the end or reduction of benefits that were vital for many individuals and families during the pandemic. SNAP Emergency Allotments were eliminated after the issuance of February benefits and more changes are on the horizon. The end of the national public health emergency for Covid-19 means huge changes for our food system and leaves vulnerable residents more at-risk.

KEN FLEMMER TO BE HONORED WITH THE GATEWAY TO SERVICE AWARD by Washington Adventist University on Sunday the 30th at commencement. Ken has worked tirelessly for over 8 years as Executive Director of ACSGW (charitable arm of several SDA churches in Silver Spring). Ken has directed ACSGW in mitigating hunger in the community, responding to community disasters, offering training for the unemployed and underemployed, and organizing youth development summer camps. Most recently ACSGW has implemented an after school tutoring program and provided culturally-relevant food for Afghan families in the area. ACSGW has partnered with WAU for many years in its pursuits to help struggling families. Ken is consistently HANDS ON in his approach. CONGRATULATIONS, KEN!

ACSGW BOARD MEMBER ERWIN MACK PASSES AWAY
Sadly Erwin passed away on April 13. Erwin was very active in the community for many years; and was involved in numerous projects, such as safety, charity and development projects. He was known throughout the area as one who sought the good of his neighbor. Many in the community have benefited from his advocacy and ministry over the years. He served on the ACSGW BoD for several years and will be greatly missed.

ACSGW PROVIDES CULTURALLY RELEVANT FOOD BASKETS for AFGHAN FAMILIES DURING RAMADAN: Boxes were packed at the ACSGW Center for 60 Afghan families at the Enclave Apartment Center in Silver Spring, in association with the Silver Spring Food Project. Additionally, Sligo Adventist Church provided hygiene items. A father and 2 sons helped with interpretation. Volunteers rallied to cover prepared boxes when it started to rain. Thanks to all for this very successful event!
